Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is dioecious: with separate male and female plants.

The berries are bitter and usually not eaten by wildlife until they have frozen and thawed through multiple cycles and fermentation has occurred. I often see bluebirds and robins feeding on them in January and February.

Die roten Beeren 🫐 des Ilex strahlen ✨ auch bei trübem Wetter.
Für den Menschen 🙅 sind sie giftig ☠️, allerdings fressen viele Vögel 🐦 die Beeren im Winter. ❄️ Amseln, Drosseln, Kernbeißer, Eichelhäher, Seidenschwänze oder Mönchsgrasmücken tragen so zur Verbreitung der Samen bei.
Die Stechpalmen sind darüberhinaus ein hervorragender Nistplatz 🪺 und eine wichtige Nahrungsquelle auch für Bienen und Hummeln 🐝.
