The amount I have to manipulate queries is prompting Google to confirm I’m not a robot on a daily basis now. I would love to switch to some of the alternatives but they’re not good yet at finding some niche things I need to find, especially when it comes to older anime art. I know the results are still there but Google has made it more difficult to find hi-res results of specific images. I’m resorting to using to crowdsource now, something I don’t like to do.

Search Engine Land: Google AI Overviews now showing on more Google Lens results. “Google announced it is expanding AI Overviews to show on more Google Lens results, including more novel or unique images. This is still only showing on a subset of searches, but now more than when Google first added AI Overviews to Google Lens in May of 2024.”

Did an image search for "90s boy band haircuts" and got this fetching image of Peter Andre.

Digital Spy accurately describes how Peter Andre made me feel in the 90s too.

A screenshot from a search results page on a search engine. Its cropped to show just an image of a slick looking Peter Andre from the 90s, with his super gelled hair style and youthful good looks. The photo title from the website digitalspy.com reads "301 Moved Permanently" - and Matt is joking that it's describing an emotion and not a server error.

For no reason as all, a quick image search review. This covers reverse image searches.

Google -- Totally sucks. Say you put in an image of Obama. Sure, the first result will actually identify him and link to Wikipedia or something. But the rest of the results will be to signed pictures for sale on Ebay. Totally enshittified.

TinEye -- Put in Obama and you will get him identified, but no further images of him. Put in someone much less well known than Obama and you will get no results at all.

Yandex -- Winner and champion. Yes, the results will be in Russian (and yes, it is bad to support Russian companies) but you get an identification and a link to "similar images." Click on this and you get a stream of pictures (mostly) of Obama. Click on one of those pictures and (usually) you will get a pop that gives you a link to the image and another "similar images" link to start the infinite scroll again. Quite the rabbit hole! The only slight drawback (depending on what you are looking for) if you start with, say, a woman sitting on a couch in a luxury apt, you start getting celebrities. If you click on a picture that has a known person in it, you start getting only pix of that person. There doesn't seem to be a setting for "truly visually similar," not just the same person.

We deep dive into reverse image search engines, comparing Google, Lenso.ai, TinEye, Yandex, Bing, and Baidu. We evaluate their effectiveness in finding exact matches, edited and similar images, and multiple sources. The analysis is based on photographs, including AI-generated and metadata-stripped images.

Which is the best reverse image search engine? Find out which one has the highest match rate, is able to identify sources where the image is used and, above all, can come up with similar images.

I don´t think I have seen these search refinements on Bing image SERPs before: For ambiguous search terms, they show more specific search terms with 4 portrait images each on the second screen.

I do like this, as it breaks up the large number of images that are usually shown.

Bing image search engine result page for "NYC" after scrolling to the second screen. Three boxes are shown, each containing 4 portrait images of search refinements: "NYC Skyline", "NYC Attractions" and "NYC restaurants".

Host your own search engine.
Either on a server or localhost.

Does anyone have any good image search engine suggestions? The ones I've been attempting to use (Google, Brave) have been utter garbage. The former is absolutely polluted with AI monstrosities and the latter gives me maybe 5 tangentially relevant images to my query at best.

I did a simple search for photos of Steller Sea Lions (looking for reference photos for art) and the results were ridiculously worthless.

This is CogDogBlogged: "Wrenching Around Google URLs, Get Your Old Skool Search Back (for now)"

Oh my, the Ai sauce is oozing from Google’s search, for which many are predicting the Fu of Google Search is gone. Yeah, it’s a mess, but frankly, I still have my fleet of hone bookmarklet gizmos and customized search engines that I still get effective use out of.

Quite a few of the wrenches and ratchets in my web toolbox go long […]
