Trácht ar Mhalairt Slí

If the road works, why are there signs pointing out where diverted traffic goes?

Did you know that most street signs in Ireland are bilingual? As Gaeilge on top and English below.

Thanks Henry, for the company last night. A good spot to do long exposure photography.

A nighttime street scene in Cork, Ireland, featuring a temporary orange road sign on a metal frame. The sign reads: "Trácht ar Mhalairt Slí DIVERTED TRAFFIC" with a black arrow pointing to the right. Behind the sign, blurred red and white light trails from passing vehicles are visible, and the street is illuminated by city lights.

I'm not Irish but I felt this in my bones!

"Ever feel something heavy in your chest, but no word for it?
That’s what losin’ Irish feels like.
In English, you’re just ‘sad’. In Irish? Tá brón orm , the sorrow’s on ya
It’s not just a language we lost.
It’s a whole way of feeling
A whole way of seeing the world." 🇮🇪

Seeing this reminded me that I one day realized, after a few years of listening to a compilation album with Stratus on it, that I had never spoken Cobham's name out loud, and mentally had been rendering it as Cov-um, like an #irishlanguage word.

The Northern Irish band Kneecap are at the center of a controversy after video emerged of a member saying: "The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP" at a gig in November 2023. The Irish-language rap trio formed in 2017, and reached a new audience when a semi-fictionalized film starring Michael Fassbender won a British Academy of Film Award and was shortlisted for an Oscar nomination. Multiple venues have canceled Kneecap's concerts, but the band's manager says that they are victims of a smear campaign because of their outspoken support for Palestine, most recently at the Coachella festival, where they described Israel's military action in Gaza as "U.S.-funded genocide." Here's more from @BBCNews.

Revival at risk? Irish speakers say policies must be stepped up

"Measaim go bhfuil gluaiseacht iontach shóisialta ann faoi láthair ó thaobh na Gaeilge de. Ach, cé go bhfuil sin iontach agus go bhfeicimid b'fhéidir meon ag athrú maidir leis an nGaeilge, ní féidir linn bogadh ar aghaidh gan tacaíocht cheart ón rialtas." -- Síomha Ní Ruairc

On 2 January 2007 Irish became an official and working language of the EU. However, under a derogation granted by the Council, not all documents were translated into Irish at that point. From 1 January 2022 Irish became officially on an equal footing with the EU's other 23 official languages. For the Irish speaking community this has been a mixed blessing with many viewing it as a waste of money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Amid so much talk of bad folks, it's comforting to read about good people doing good things. Case in point, Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy and his artist wife Yvonne McGuinness, who have bought an iconic movie theater in Dingle, Ireland, which closed in 2021 due to rising costs and falling attendance. The Phoenix opened as a dance hall and cinema in 1919; devastating fires in 1921 and 1938 gave it its name.

“I’ve been going to see films at the Phoenix since I was a young boy on summer holidays,” Murphy told the Irish Independent. “My Dad saw movies there when he was a young man before me, and we’ve watched many films at the Phoenix with our own kids. We recognise what the cinema means to Dingle.” The Phoenix is the only cinema in a Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) area in Ireland, and the new owners say this will be acknowledged in its programming. Here's more.

There is no Irish language word for yes and no. That’s right, there are no all-purpose or generic words in Irish just to mean them.

So how do we answer questions in the #Irishlanguage then?

I have only a wee bit of Irish (I grew up in the North and now live in England), and I'm hoping youse can help me with a pronunciation question:

my friend = mo chara
how is that pronounced?
I always thought it was like "mo harra"
but I have recently been hearing it pronounced "mo karra"

is this a regional accent difference? Or have I been wrong this whole time?

What are the most valuable #Irishlanguage learning websites (not social accounts) you use at the moment and why? Doing some research!

I loved nualeargais.ie/ (despite how janky it looked) but it's RIP at the moment

A chairde! My latest #Irishlanguage article for RTÉ is now live and here I am with a classic topic: Irish characters in video games (the better ones).

Note: I write in Gaelainn Chorca Dhuibhne which is the West Kerry dialect so my spelling is non-standard. #gaeilge
