Portland zoning permits were approved for the planned Alaska Airlines widebody maintenance hangar at PDX Airport. This hangar will have 2 bays for widebody planes (787-9/10, A330). There's no room for such a hangar at Alaska's HQ Seattle SEA. PDX was apparently next choice as Alaska's secondary #PNW hub. Alaska Air Group regional subsidiary Horizon Air has its primary maintenance base at PDX, adjacent to this property. portland.gov/ppd/zoning-land-u #Alaska787 #KPDX #aviation #business #avgeek

"Pendleton City Council recommends SkyWest Charter for airport service" by East Oregonian (Pendleton, #Oregon) - If US DoT Essential Air Service follows the local recommendation as expected, Boutique Air's 8-seat PC-12 turboprops will be replaced with SkyWest Airlines charter 30-seat CRJ200 jets on Portland #KPDX - Pendleton #KPDT route. Some locals objected that the larger planes require going through TSA checkpoint. eastoregonian.com/2026/02/03/p #aviation #travel #avgeek #PNW

Update: Portland City Council is considering zoning changes with tax incentives for Alaska Airlines' planned widebody (787, A330) maintenance hangar at Portland Int'l Airport #KPDX in exchange for job creation. Approved in committee on Jan 13, now on agenda for the full council Feb 12. [edit: postponed Feb 18] The new hangar would be adjacent to Alaska's regional Horizon Air division's existing maintenance facility. portland.gov/council/documents #Alaska787 #aviation #business #avgeek #Portland #PNW

This is an odd bird. I've undoubtedly seen this 757-200 TF-FIC at Portland before in IcelandAir livery. Now possibly doing the plane's last gig before IcelandAir retires all its 757s this winter, it's in an air charter company's livery, in reportedly all first-class seating. It's operated by IcelandAir for the air charter company. It's flying as ICE1437. It originated from Reykjavik yesterday and is now headed to Anchorage, Alaska. #KPDX #aviation #travel #avgeek

I expected we'd see more 777-9s in Portland eventually after the Boeing test pilots did a touch&go on #KPDX Runway 10R two weeks ago. Today N779XY was back again for a touch&go on Runway 10L. Photos taken from home: takeoff from PDX and climbout with sunlight enhancing the wing features including the folding wingtips. With wingtips extended, it's wider than a 747-8. The flight originated at Seattle Boeing Field #KBFI, Boeing's flight test base, and is now returning there. #aviation #avgeek #PNW

Ummm... Uh oh?😱 #NOAA Hurricane Hunter Gulfstream IV N49RF NOAA49 has a flight plan to come to Portland #KPDX tomorrow Sun Feb 1, 2026. I don't see an atmospheric river in Sunday's or #GroundHogDay's rain🌧️ forecast. But this may hint at an upgrade. Rainy day in Portland today - typical Winter #weather in #PNW. But when three special liveries were taking off from PDX a matter of minutes apart, I stepped outside with my camera.

Spotted:
Alaska 737-900 "OneWorld" (Alaska's alliance livery) N487AS for Las Vegas LAS
Horizon E175 "Horizon Retro" (Horizon livery from before Alaska acquisition) N652MK for Albuquerque ABQ
Horizon E175 "Go Cougs" (Washington State University) N661QX for Redmond RDM

Speculation has swirled about where Alaska Airlines will build a hangar in or near Seattle big enough for its widebody 787s & A330s. Their Seattle maintenance hangars are 737-sized. While plans at SEA are rumored, apparently their first new West Coast widebody hangar may be in Portland #KPDX. Presentation slides for Portland City Council show location. (It's adjacent to Alaska's Horizon subsidiary PDX maintenance base.) portland.gov/sites/default/fil #Alaska787 #aviation #business #travel #avgeek #PNW

Boeing 787-9 line number 1011 in Norwegian livery approaching Portland #KPDX from Everett #KPAE as BOE845 for repainting into Lufthansa livery. This is the next of the saga of Norwegian 787 orders stranded in production when the airline went out of business. The whole batch have been bought by Lufthansa to get ahead of factory backlog. I can't see Runway 10R/L final approach from home, but got this 5mi/8km away at 10,000ft over Vancouver WA on downwind to PDX. #aviation #business #travel #avgeek

Lufthansa has bought the whole batch of parked planes and it was coming to Portland to be repainted in their livery. Thanks to a @JetTip alert, I see Boeing's 777-9 ("777X") prototype N779XY has flight plans scheduled today as BOE003 to SeaTac #KSEA & Portland #KPDX. So far test flights haven't gone much to airline hubs. This may be a hint that testing is getting increasing simulation of airline service prior to FAA certification. I've been expecting we'll see them in Portland when some of the backlog of unpainted airframes in Everett come here for paint. This is a bonus early visit. #aviation #travel #avgeek

Spotted today departing Portland PDX: after weeks in the Boeing Paint Hangar, this Boeing 787-9 LN983 departed PDX as BOE844. It was built in 2023 for Norwegian Long Haul, not delivered because the carrier went out of business. It was parked until Boeing found a new buyer for it. Now repainted for new customer Lufthansa, it's headed back up to Everett for customer delivery. I took video (earlier in this thread) of this same plane's landing at PDX on Dec 11, 2025. #KPDX #aviation #avgeek #PNW
