#LanguageTool retires free tier because they started using AI:

“We have made the difficult decision to limit the use of LanguageTool’s browser extension to Premium users only. The rise of generative AI has made it more challenging to sustainably monetize our offering.”

This sucks — it means either paying for one more service or trying to find another spell/grammar checker :(

I guess it's time to self-host #LanguageTool

Notice that appeared after I opened my browser: "Upgrade Required to Use the LanguageTool Browser Extension. We have made the difficult decision to limit the use of LanguageTool's browser extension to Premium users only. The rise of generative Al has made it more challenging to sustainably monetize our offering. A majority of users use our products for free, and the relatively small percentage of Premium subscribers is all that is subsidizing our continuously increasing server costs. To improve our Premium experience and to sustain our business model, we'll be making the LanguageTool browser extension available exclusively for paying customers."

Spelling and grammar checking tools have been overrun by AI. There's a need for an alternative, but few contenders for the crown.

No, thank you! You are not that important

LanguageTool ends free use of Browser Extension – Here are some Options

LanguageTool is an AI-based grammar checker. They just announced that the browser extension will only be usable to their cloud service with a premium subscription from Jan 2026. My video explains the announcement, and then goes through an overview o ...continues

RE: pouet.chapril.org/@arawa/11574

🤧When you’re sick and stuck in your room, what better to do than update your beloved project? Here’s Dictionariez v6.4.3:

1. Adapted the translator’s font size on websites with very low rem values. Seems you can't just assume every website sets their base font to 16px or 20.

2. Fixed the z-index to prevent overlap issues on some sites.

3. Removed the upfront privacy consent dialog, it felt intrusive and off-putting. The privacy policy is now linked in the app instead.

4. Added the ability to close the translator by pressing the `ESC` key, an escape hatch for the keyboard-savvy. A small but mighty step toward human-friendly UX.

ltex-ls is great for integrating #LanguageTool prose checking via #LSP into your #HelixEditor! valentjn.github.io/ltex/ ... There is also vale-ls, which I have enabled as well. I just download ltex-ls and configure it as an LSP for your .txt and .md docs... that's it!

#Urgh Apparently, I cannot get the #FlyCheck #LanguageTool plugin for #Emacs to recognise #AucTeX. The checker only wants to work for work plain #latex mode. This is even after adding LaTeX-mode to flycheck-languagetool-active-modes...

Would folks be interested in a writeup with working scripts for 100% locally #selfhosted #LanguageTool Desktop (#macOS, #Linux should work too) with full grammar checking and sentence rewriting capabilities, taking advantage of the open source LT server, #ollama, and #mitmproxy or #Proxyman ?

The upshot is #private #secure #grammarcheck with #LLM rewrites, like a secure self-hosted alternative to #Grammarly without sharing out every word you type. Awfully #hacky, but it works... #infosec
