"An estimated 30% of pipes delivering water to NYC buildings may have lead – and now there’s a map to help determine if your building is affected."

DEP est. that replacing all of NYC’s lead pipes will cost $2 billion – or $10,000 to $15,000 per line. Homeowners & landlords are responsible for replacing the pipes.

EPA estimates that up to 9 million homes are served by lead pipes across the country. No level of lead is deemed safe to human health.

#Biden sets a 10-year deadline for US cities to replace #LeadPipes and make drinking water safer

"The rule is the strongest overhaul of lead standards in 3 decades... The announcement highlights an issue — safe #DrinkingWater — that #Harris has prioritized as VP & during her campaign... The #EPA estimates this will... avoid up to 1,500 premature deaths a year... To help communities comply, the agency is making available an additional $2.6B for #infrastructure"

🎺 🎺 The Environmental Protection Agency finalized a rule Tuesday requiring water #utilities to replace all #leadpipes within a decade, a move aimed at eliminating a #toxic threat that continues to affect tens of thousands of American children each year.
The move also tightens the amount of lead allowed in the nation’s drinking water, coming 40 years after Congress determined that #lead pipes posed a serious #risk to public #health and #banned them in new construction.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), also known as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) of 2021, provides $15 billion nationwide in funding through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) for lead service line (LSL) identification and replacement for over the next five years.

"The water investments in the bipartisan package were also Harris’ ideas. She was the lead author on [a law] that would replace . Today, $15bn is being spent on this effort across the country, and the Biden-Harris administration is on track to replace 1.7m lead pipes.

When it comes to protecting people and the planet, Harris has been ahead of her time. After decades of effort, her vision for a cleaner environment has slowly but surely made its way into law."

Millions of #lead #pipes would finally be ripped out under proposed #EPA rule
The rule could generate up to $34.8 billion in #health benefits each year.
Rule would require all lead service lines in the country be replaced within 10 years, and would lower the current lead action level in drinking water from 15 parts per billion to 10ppb. But, ripping out and replacing #leadpipes will not come cheap. EPA estimates it will cost $20B to $30B to replace the pipes over 10 years

The toxic, corrosive reason #saltwater intrusion would be a catastrophe for #NewOrleans

By Ella Nilsen, CNN

Published Oct 16, 2023 12:14 PM EDT

"It would be a nightmare for any city: A massive wedge of saltwater creeping up the Mississippi River, contaminating drinking water at treatment plants one-by-one and threatening the health of hundreds of thousands of residents.

"But it’s a looming catastrophe for New Orleans, where officials estimate that tens of thousands of the city’s water pipes are made of lead.

"New Orleans is far from the only city in the US with lead pipes, but over the last few weeks it faced the possibility that, without a herculean and costly effort to stop it, saltwater could corrode those pipes and leach toxic metals into the drinking water supply."

In the US, the issue of lead in drinking water is a big one. A national action plan is underway to get rid of lead pipes to protect 400,000 children in schools. Here in the UK, it isn’t even talked about. Over the last four months I’ve been gathering school water data and have found some shocking things inews.co.uk/news/school-childr
