My subscription to Microsoft 365 ends today after cancelling it ages ago. Another big tech connection cut.

Feel like having a minor knees-up to celebrate.

GrapheneOS Experience (6/6) - Conclusion

I love GrapheneOS and all it stands for. But the issue isn't the OS - it's the 3rd party apps. Whether relying on Google Services or not liking a rooted phone.

I'm hoping things change in the future and far more apps will be independent.

But for now, I think I'll slink back to a standard OS, not sign in with a Google account and disable all the Google apps - just to have a fully-functioning phone.

GrapheneOS Experience (5/6) - Degraded experience

Banking apps and NFC failing. Plus other apps not working without Google Services.

All in all - for me - a degraded experience without getting rid of Google at the core.

Recommendation? Disable Google Services on your current phone for a day and see what doesn't work. If it's minimal - or you can do without the broken apps - then I definitely think GrapheneOS might be for you.

GrapheneOS Experience (4/6) - De-Googled?

A third of my apps didn't work without Google Services. Yes - I can sandbox these, but some you want to run in the background for notifications (Proton Mail, Blink Home Cameras and Paralino were guilty of this).

So guess what? I had to run Google Services. Yes - with strict permissions and no account. But it was running nonetheless.

So I wasn't 100% de-googled.

GrapheneOS Experience (3/6) - A Rooted Device

The problems started because, in installing GrapheneOS, you've rooted the device (i.e. having your own super-privileges).

Some apps - particularly banking ones - can check for this and refuse to work. Same goes with NFC wallet apps. I had two banking apps that crashed. This wasn't ideal. Some banks don't even offer a mobile view on browsers, which makes checking bank accounts a pain without the app.

GrapheneOS Experience (2/6) - Positives

The install was straightforward - even for a newb like me. It took about 15 minutes and I had a de-googled phone up-and-running.

The interface is clean and crisp. It comes with some basic apps to get you going (phone, contacts, files, etc) and a simple App Store to download Aurora - which is what I'd recommend to replace Google Play Store. It's a basic Android OS - with zero bloat. It's great.

But...

GrapheneOS Experience (1/6) - Intro

After having GrapheneOS on my Pixel 6 for 5 days, I thought I'd write my experience in a quick thread outlining what I liked and what were the issues.

It was my main phone which really concentrated the mind on using this OS moving forwards.

Keep in my mind the reason for the change: to de-google entirely.

I hope this can help anyone considering doing the same.
