«De jure discrimination, such as segregation laws, meant that Black and Latino people were widely barred from attending many universities, thus limiting today which students of color would benefit from legacy admissions. “Who had the opportunity to attend these institutions one or two generations back?” Park asked. “Predominantly white families.”»

#California bans #legacyadmissions at all #colleges
"In California, everyone should be able to get ahead through merit, skill, and hard work," #Newsom said in a statement. "The California Dream shouldn't be accessible to just a lucky few, which is why we're opening the door to higher education wide enough for everyone, fairly." California's law, which takes effect Sept. 1, 2025, is nation's fifth legacy admissions ban, but only second that will apply to private colleges.

Nanette Asimov: #California bans legacy admissions for #Stanford other private universities

"California has become the second state to prohibit private colleges and universities from giving extra consideration to applicants who are related to alumni or donors.

AB1780, signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday, bans so-called legacy admissions at private campuses that benefit from state funding, such as the Cal Grants used by thousands of students. Stanford University and the University of Southern California will be among the impacted campuses."

Massachusetts Bill is seeking to charge fees for legacy admissions. It would be a small start, but a start nonetheless.

Some may say “it runs in the family”.
Who benefits from antiquated, outmoded practices like #LegacyAdmissions? Hard to tell. Especially with a few testimonials from people whose privilege was getting admitted through selective processes which emphasized #bloodlines.
In a part of the World which emphasizes #meritocracy so heartily, this situation is in a long list of… headscratchers.

Is #AffirmativeAction Unfair? Are #LegacyAdmissions?
These may wrong the very individuals who are given these preferences, set not to help those students, but rather the school or the country. If a student is a worse candidate for admission on standard measures than other admits, they may have a greater struggle to make it through school. Historically, the poor kid, the woman, the racially, ethnically or religiously foreign student had to be exemplary candidates; now they may need extra support.

"Wesleyan University, a liberal arts college in Connecticut, is ending legacy admissions, which give a leg up to the children of alumni, just weeks after the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action.

After the Supreme Court decision, legacy admissions came under heavy attack because the practice tends to favor white, wealthy applicants over Black, Hispanic, Asian American and Native American students"
