LIVE: Shetlanders march at Scotland’s Viking festival in Lerwick

Hundreds of Shetlanders march through Lerwick, Scotland, carrying flaming torches to mark the ancient Viking festival of Up Helly Aa. The tradition dates to the 19th century. Keep up with the latest news from around the world:

Just in case you want to see a thousand or so people carrying burning torches through a town...in 35mph winds...

...Up Helly Aa starts in half an hour.

No, we're not going. Yes we're watching it from our lounge. It's proper rough outside. Kudos to the Jarl Squad and others in the procession!

Happy #UpHellyAa for those that celebrate.

OK, there are plenty of other village events but #Lerwick #UHA is still the biggie.

For #TravelThursday here's the Broch of Clickimin near Lerwick on Shetland which we looked around in 2024. It can be dated to at least the early Iron Age although its actual function, like all brochs, is not clear. Farmsteads, status symbols, and fortifications all have supporters but also those who disagree. Archaeologists, eh? What are they like?

It's a grey day with a lot of distant fog smothering any distant views. We're on a grassy area dotted with some flat stones at ground level marking where walls once stood and, just behind, a round-walled structure. The building is about three metres high and dozens wide, although we can only see a small part of it here, and has a small window gap in the curved wall. The wall itself is built up from roughly squared-off stones of varying sizes, closely compacted together with small tufts of grass and moss growing in the tight cracks. It feels quiet, cool, a little damp in the air, and with a still sense of history.

I have never attended Up Helly Aa, although we did sail up and around Shetland two years ago. But I was reminded by this article and an extremely amusing (he pokes fun at everyone but in a very gentle way) program by Mark Steel from Lerwick, with an accompanying one from Unst. Highly listenable.

For #SchiffsSamstag here's the Albatros Expeditions ship Ocean Albatros, a polar expedition ship which means her itineraries in the Arctic and Antarctic regions are well outside the price range we can afford. This was taken last year when we visited a very foggy Lerwick in Shetland.

It's a cold, grey day and we're on some raised land in a coastal city looking out over the grey roof of a long building with red, corrugated metal panel walls. A flat, cold stretch of water reaches out towards low-lying land in the distance with its hilly tops vanishing in the low cloud that smothers the sky. Heading outwards and aligned so it almost looks to be resting on the roof of the foreground building there is an expedition cruise ship. It's fairly stocky, only a hundred metres long with several decks of cabin windows and shallow balconies. Other than the top deck with the bridge which is painted white the ship is a bright blue with a thick diagonal line of dark blue curving towards the front. Albatros Expeditions is written near the aft and along the front of the hull.

Last year, on a trip to Scotland, I included some stops to see places my great-grandmother mentioned in her memoirs. I just finished a post about some of these spots: hotelexistence.ca/my-scottish-

The amazingly well preserved Clickimin Broch on the south-west edge of Lerwick in Shetland. The site was first occupied around three thousand years ago, with the main structure dating back around two thousand years. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/she

Clickimin Broch. The image shows a gravel path leading between high walls made of large very light grey stones. It leads to a rectangular doorway in a large circular structure, also made of unmortared stones. There is a thin layer of turf on top of all the walls. The sky is blue.

I went to town for the day - Lerwick. Nice to escape, even if it was for the dentist.

Looking down across a town and the roofs of houses and buildings of all shapes and sizes. There are trees and green spaces and on the right is a patch of blue sea where there is a harbour and more houses behind. In the far distance - just above the centre of the photo - is the top part of a huge cruise liner, a floating hotel. Further away still there are some low hills. The sky is pale blue with some cloud.

We took both the dogs to town. One got his hair cut and the other was my companion and went shopping with me. Nice day.
