#Broch

If we look further back, those tower houses may, themselves, have been inspired by older building going all the way back to the iron age brochs of Atlantic Scotland, some of which, like the 13 metre tall Broch of Mousa, still stand to this day and are a testament to the strength of this style of building.

Miller's design was inspired, at least in part, by the Scottish Baronial tradition encapsulated by 16th century tower houses, and I wonder if Stevenson was similarly inspired when looking for a design for a lighthouse which could withstand the full force of the formidable waves and swell whipped by Scottish winter storms.

Looking up at one of the tower-like stairwells of James Miller's ealy 1900s Glasgow Royal Infirmary buildings, I was struck by how similar they are to the lighthouses designed by Robert Stevenson almost a century earlier, such as the one on the Bell Rock (the world's oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse).

For #TravelThursday here's the Broch of Clickimin near Lerwick on Shetland which we looked around in 2024. It can be dated to at least the early Iron Age although its actual function, like all brochs, is not clear. Farmsteads, status symbols, and fortifications all have supporters but also those who disagree. Archaeologists, eh? What are they like?

It's a grey day with a lot of distant fog smothering any distant views. We're on a grassy area dotted with some flat stones at ground level marking where walls once stood and, just behind, a round-walled structure. The building is about three metres high and dozens wide, although we can only see a small part of it here, and has a small window gap in the curved wall. The wall itself is built up from roughly squared-off stones of varying sizes, closely compacted together with small tufts of grass and moss growing in the tight cracks. It feels quiet, cool, a little damp in the air, and with a still sense of history.

What do Pictish stones, a Lego broch, and a nuclear reactor control room have in common? They all live in a wonderfully eclectic museum in #Thurso.
The North Coast Visitor Centre explores all things #Caithness, from fossils to contemporary art.

A whimsical scene made of Lego: We see a cylindrical grey building with two concentric walls and a conical brown (thatched) roof. The cutaway front shows the interior with three floors, several lego people, and cattle on the ground floor. On the middle floor a beaming lego housewife stands by a hearth gripping a fish. Just outside the broch a serious looking lego man is focusing on his work (I can't tell what he's doing – perhaps forging a sword?). The landscape features green lego moorland, a brown path, a few pink and yellow flowers, and a bit of sandy lego beach. The Ulbster Stone from the 8th or 9th century is covered with carvings. A central cross with interlaced knots is flanked by 8 Pictish symbols. Clockwise from top right we see a crescent & V-rod, beast (possibly a lion), double disc, double crescent, serpent or dragon (or serpent with wolf head), step, fish, Pictish beast (a mythical creature said to resemble a seahorse, dolphin, dragon, or elephant).Control desk of the Dounreay Materials Testing Reactor. A pale green crescent-shaped desk is festooned with dials, gauges, buttons, and a black dialup telephone. On the wall behind it are more panels, warning indicators, and rows of black labels and red buttons. The Dounreay site is now being decommissioned.

An unusual example of a lowland broch. The elusive Tappoch (or Torwood) Broch is located near Denny in central Scotland, concealed within a dense (though now partly cleared) forest. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/den

Tappoch or Torwood Broch. The image shows a circular structure of partly visible stones, especially within the hollow centre. Much of it is covered by heather and the outside is largely of earth. In the background are conifer trees. The scene is in sunlight.

Dun Beag is one of the best preserved brochs and a good example of a broch tower.

Brochs only appear in Scotland. They are dry stone structures formed of two concentric walls with a narrow entrance passage. Stone stairs ran between the walls to provide access, perhaps to upper floors, and the top.

Scotland’s brochs were built in the Iron Age, first emerging about 2,300 years ago. Their use continued until the middle of the first millennium CE.

Perched on a rocky hilltop, it displays a number of defensive features. The entrance is a narrow passage, and door-checks show it was once closed by a timber door. Once inside, there are very few breaks in the strong, tall dry stone walls. One opening, at ground level, leads to a small chamber – possibly a guardroom. Another leads to a narrow stone stair, of which 20 steps still survive, with another possible guard cell at the entrance.  It is likely to have been about 10 metres tall although there is only about 3 metres still standing. It would have been an imposing feature in the landscape. The view from up there takes in Loch Bracadale and the Outer Hebrides in the distance. Brodie the Fox Red Labrador is there to provide some scale.

The Broch of Gurness, the wonderfully evocative remains of an Iron Age broch and village overlooking Eynhallow Sound on Orkney's West Mainland. It was built as a planned settlement some time before 200BC. The site was excavated in 1929. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/wes

The Broch of Gurness. The image shows a complex structure made from very light-coloured stone surrounded by a grassy ditch in the foreground with a massive stone wall within it. There is a taller structure slightly further away. In the background on the right is a stretch of water with land just visible on the right of it. The scene is in sunlight.

Clickimin Broch. The image shows a gravel path leading between high walls made of large very light grey stones. It leads to a rectangular doorway in a large circular structure, also made of unmortared stones. There is a thin layer of turf on top of all the walls. The sky is blue.

Another day, another flashback from a couple of years ago and another #broch.
Another of the 3 brochs found in the #ScottishBorders - this time at Torwoodlee. Perched on a hill looking down the Gala Valley to Eildon / Trimontium.

Originally a hillfort attacked by the invading Roman army c. 79 CE, the broch was then built over the fort site around 100 CE to be finally destroyed around the year 140.
Nearby is the atmospheric ruin of Torwoodleee Tower, built 1601 to replace an earlier castle.

The foundations of a circular broch, the entrance corridor clearly visible. Trees and a cold blue sky in the background. The remains of Torwoodleee Tower, a rectangular block with a round tower rising up at one end. Cold blue skies behind and a scraping of snow on the ground.
