I have never attended Up Helly Aa, although we did sail up and around Shetland two years ago. But I was reminded by this article and an extremely amusing (he pokes fun at everyone but in a very gentle way) program by Mark Steel from Lerwick, with an accompanying one from Unst. Highly listenable.

Scotland's most northerly castle, Muness Castle on the island of Unst in Shetland. It was built from 1598 by Laurence Bruce, a deeply unpopular Sheriff of Shetland. It was attacked by the Earl of Orkney in 1608 and the French in 1627. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/uns

Muness Castle. The image shows the ruins of a large grey stone castle with a circular tower on the right and a long building range continuing to its left. The ruins stop below roof level. There is a grey stone wall this side of them, beyond rough grass. The sky is grey, and the light subdued.

Continuing to share favourite images from my 30+ year photographic career. One more from a favourite project; ‘The Magic of the Scottish Islands’, 2000 and 2001. This is at Hermaness on Unst, the most northerly of the Shetland Islands. At times during this day I was the most northerly person in the British Isles.

View along steep dark cliffs, with gently-sloping rough moorland above on the left and a grey-blue sea on the right, all becoming hazy in the distance. On the cliffs and in the air are hundreds of birds, mostly large white gannets.

Muness Castle is a late 16th century tower house on #Unst, the northmost island of #Shetland.

(I miss Shetland, but it's a long way away from Tasmania. Although closer than London.)

Two walls of a large room. The wall are now grey stone, but were originally covered some sort of plaster The roof is long gone. Near the top of the walls is a row of square holes. Possibly where the rafters of the ceiling/next level floor were.
On one wall is a wide, low hearth Above it the stones are arranged in an arch.
In the other wall is an arched window, almost as high as the roof. The wall here is very thick. Enough to hold a closest or small chamber. Through the window some green grass and a small ruined building are just visible.

Welcome to Tea, Toast and Trivia.

Thank you for listening in.

I am your host, Rebecca Budd, and I am looking forward to sharing this moment with you.

Cheryl Jamieson, Fused Glass Artist

I am travelling virtually 6,700 kilometers to Unst, Shetland, to meet up with artist Cheryl Jamieson, whose expertise lies in the intricate art of fused glass. Cheryl’s deep-rooted pride in her Shetland heritage resonates through her remarkable artwork, which draws inspiration from the dramatic landscapes of Shetland. Her fused glass pieces exquisitely depict the stunning scenery, from the lively ponies gracing the hills to the diverse birdlife flourishing on the rugged cliffs.

Cheryl’s creativity is profoundly influenced by the rich Viking heritage evident in the renowned Up Helly Aa events and the numerous archaeological sites scattered across Shetland. It’s truly an honour to delve into Cheryl Jamieson’s world of fused glass art, intricately woven with the essence of Shetland’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

I invite you to put the kettle on and add to this exciting dialogue on Tea Toast & Trivia.

Cheryl Jamieson, Fused Glass Artists – Tea. Toast. & Trivia.

A very special thank you, Cheryl, for sharing your creative journey with us. We connected when the wind was high in Unst, but the internet connection held strong and our tea kept us warm.

Cheryl, you inspire me with your tenacity and determination to design and create art that reflects the spirit of Shetland.  You said it best with these words: Glansin Glass is Shetland glass – through and through!

Listeners, thank you for joining Cheryl and me on Tea, Toast and Trivia. I invite you to connect with Cheryl on her website, Glansin Glass and on Facebook. Immerse yourself in the intricate beauty of Shetland’s landscapes and cultural heritage through Cheryl’s exquisitely fused glass pieces.

Until next time we meet, dear friends, safe travels wherever your adventures lead you.

And finally, St Olaf's Chapel (12th century).

This is not an island you come to if you want to zoom around and look at everything and then leave. If you like to wander and take photos and stare at wonderful scenery, it is definitely a place to visit. And there things to look at (easier if you do have a car, but I didn't).

I missed it very much when I left.

Inside a ruined stone chapel. At the end is a wall with an arched door opening and above that an open rectangular window opening. A length wall half this height stretches out to enclose this space. The stones of the wall are almost hidden by lichen.
There are two graves inside, surrounded by rusty metal railing with spiked tops. One grave has a grey cross covered in lichen. The other is a flat stone with names and verses (not legible at this photo size), early/mid Victorian-era. There's another stone to the side (early 20th C), flat, painted white with paint coming off, partially hidden behind a clump of spiky weds. The ground is generally over grown but a less overgrown than the rest path has been worn through the centre.

Underhoull Broch, Unst, Shetland. Mostly just the defensive walls I think (at the time I visited here I still believed it was possible for me to go and look at cool things, without needing to put them in any context). So broch, walls, great view.

A grass-covered hill, with a trench partly encircling it and ridge on the other side. There are two vaguely dome shaped lumps on top and two short bits on the side that are sort of horizontal. Basically, it looks like someone's thrown down a lot of stone and stuff and then piled dirt and grass over it, with a grass wall around the whole thing. (Actually I guess that's what it is)

Haroldswick is another town. Here are the heritage centre, the boat haven (wooden boats) and the Viking replicas I shared yesterday, as well as nice cafe and rocks.

#Unst #Shetland #landscapephotography

A yellow stone wall beside a road, running down to blue with dark blue water. On the opposite side of the bay are about a dozen buildings, probably mostly house. All are white with grey roofs and white chimneys sticking up. The area they're on is relatively flat with flat, brown hills beyond.
The sky is blue. It's is very sunny and the white houses shine a little.

Baltasound is the largest town. The right hand photo shows the Baltasound hotel (it is surrounded by wooden cabins). It's about twenty minutes walk to the nearest shop. That problem of many hotels where you can't sleep because of noise from traffic, traffic lights, night clubs etc. is not a problem here.

#Baltasound #Unst #Shetland #TrafficProblemsNot

A stretch of road leading off into the distance with paddocks either side, and a side saying "Baltasound". In the distance a stretch of water can just be see, with low green hills behind. To the right a couple of possible houses but with the sun behind it's hard to make out any details.Another road leading off into the distance with paths either side. Towards the end is a stall stone building, partially hidden and in front of that, a ring of wooden cabins, also partially hidden. There's some buildings on the opposite side of the road, sort of red-brown but too far away to make out any details.
There's a post and white fence running along the sides of the road.

A thread of photos from Unst, Shetland, and then I will move south.

Unst is the northernmost island of Shetland. I don't think there's any thing north of it but ocean (and ice). There are lands at a higher latitude but they're off to the sides. If head off in the direction of this view, you should hit Norway (where the nearest big city is).

It's very picturesque and the people are very friendly. Everyone you meet is your new best friends (although you won't meet many, as there's only about 600 living there).

Looking over a stretch of sunlight grass towards the sea. While the foreground is bright green, the land slowly rises to a long, low hill, which shades from green to brown, exaggerated by a shadow across the peak of the hill.
Just before the hill is a small grey house-shaped building with a stone fence running up to it, but it is too far away to make out details. The land ends at the waterside in a sudden drop, with what looks like a small rock beach inside the curved.
The blue-grey water is smooth for a sea. The sky is full of white clouds.

The Viking Unst Project and Skidbladner, inside

#vikings #unst

Photo of a long room with walls made from stacked grey stones. Timber poles, regularly places down the length of the room, hold up the roof beams. Smaller wooden poles form the roof. On the right the wall is lined with timber panels and there's an opening with light shining through it (the entrance door). In the foreground in a wooden bench, then an open space edged with low stone walls. Beyond these walls are chairs made from cut down logs on end, place around stump table, with a bottle sitting on it.
Beyond the sitting area its dark but the far stone wall can just be seen.On narrow ship, with sides and deck made from grey wooden planks. Wooden ribs placed regularly along the length join the deck to the side. Between the ribs, lengths of oars stick out.
In the centre is a narrow post with a cross bar with circles on each end. Towards the bow, the deck has no boards, revealing the support beams below. The bow narrows to a raised point, Beyond this, are a low building with stone walls and grass-covered roof.

A roughly oval shaped building with what look like drystone rocks walls (stones packed on each other, without mortar). The roof is covered with green grass. In the centre of the front wall is a small gable over an open wooden door. In front of the door is a panel on post (which gives information about the building). Either side of the door, at the top of the wall, are small square openings.
The building is surrounded by green grass. A path runs across the front (with a short path going up to the door) and continues behind the buildings, where there's a long, grey-timbered ship. On the other side, the blue water of the bay can be seen. The sky is blue and full of large white clouds with

Bay and rock, Haroldswick, Unst, Shetland. Definitely a rock.

#landscapephotography #Unst #Shetland #Beach #NorthtoSouth

On the edge of bay, rounded stones and seaweed intermixed with sea water. Some of the larger seaweed is bright orange.
The further away, the less dense the weeds. Out where it looks like the seaweed ends is a long black rock. Although a few minutes earlier, it jumped into the water, disappeared for a while, before coming back to watch me.
In the background are two low hills reaching out towards each other to form the mouth of the bay.
The sky is mostly clouds, but they're fluffy white and the blue sky is visible higher up.
