#LinuxOnTheDesktop

That's twice now that an update to #archlinux or its default breeze theme or related package broke my ability to log in. This time it appears to do with the default breeze splash screen. Changing to none got around the issue.

I learned my lesson last time though and installed timeshift and use it before I do updates. It was easy to revert back.

This one was odd in the fact that it was broken for wayland but not x11.

A good time to consider #LinuxOnTheDesktop?

So.

Linux is toll und ich will nicht wieder weg. Für mich war 2024 schon das Jahr des #LinuxOnTheDesktop 😁

I just saw something about Linux on the Desktop and couldn't resist.

#LinuxOnTheDesktop

That "Always has been" meme, the one with two astronauts looking at the Earth.

One looks towards Earth and says "It's the year of Linux on the Desktop".

The other astronaut behind him, pointing a gun at the first, is saying "It always has been".

Since my previous laptop still works, but is physically wanting, I decided to wipe it out and set it up as my "occasional #Windows" machine.

I couldn't get the touchpad or an external mouse working during installation and struggled to use keyboard navigation since it is so poorly supported. I can't remember the last time I experienced such poor support for hardware with #Linux. Just reminded of the person posting here that #LinuxOnTheDesktop couldn't be taken seriously because of... flaws...

Someone repurposed the crazy repeated Princess of the Crystal transformation / plot exposition sequences from Penguindrum to be about... the Year of Linux on the Desktop. And I can't stop laughing. youtube.com/watch?v=N4FlL1FCbv

I bought my first Windows PC sometime around 1993, and Windows has been my home desktop ever since. That's over 30 years on a succession of different Microsoft Windows versions.

Microsoft's move to build Recall screen-scraping into the OS has convinced me that they no longer view me as a customer, but as a product.

For that reason, I'm switching to Linux on the Desktop.

Here's the thing about #linux and #linuxonthedesktop

It's a hell of a lot better than it used to be, it won't work for everyone and very definitely your experience may vary.

As I'm experimenting with #linuxOnTheDesktop at the moment (skip-dived a relatively recent Dell Latitude 7300 yesterday that Ubuntu certified), can anyone recommend a #mastodon app for #linux? I suspect I'll miss a lot of @ivory sync/features, but I'd like the nicest experience I can get on this machine

Testing myself to make sure I'm not in a dream, because after all my compiles, it looks like my new kernel, nvidia drivers, bbswitch, btrfs swapfiles, and pinpoint are all working together nicely.

The latest edition of #Microsoft #Windows has " #Copilot " an #AI "assistant."
It is #unremovable and #mandatory, regardless of how unethical it is.
I guess this is the year of #LinuxOnTheDesktop

@brettcannon what's a "file viewer"? I use `less`. #NotHelping #LinuxOnTheDesktop

If I were using desktop GUI things more than a terminal and browser on Linux: Before settling on a distro's Gnome based default, also give KDE a try.

In my more moons ago than I can count past experience it was always more polished and helpful in that regard. (but my command line based user habits didn't need it)

What's going on with my #fonts in #gnome recently? I have a nice font selected in #gnomeTweaks but it's using *this* ugly thing. Yuk!

A screenshot of part of a window for the Oh My SVG app. The font for most of the text - title, button, labels is a chunky displeasing font and not the one configured (which does appear to be used for the numbers on a slider control)

Discover the freedom, security, and customization of Linux on your desktop. Save money, enhance privacy, and join a vibrant community. Experience the power of open-source software.

Let's get that graph ticking upwards.

According to one measurement by one firm, Linux reached 3.07 percent market share of global desktop operating systems in June 2023. It's a notable first for the more than 30-year-old operating system, though other numbers in Statcounter's chart open it up to many more interpretations. [...]

GSuite is a tour de force demonstration that UX can be really, really crappy if it's free or very low cost.

This contradicts the main criticism that has been leveled at OSS application developers for the past 20 years. Seems like people don't actually care as much about UX as they do about $.

So, stop listening to the folks who say otherwise.
