This memory gives a taste of the places that interest me. This is from a visit to the Belas Knap Neolithic Long Barrow. This is part of the "Cotswald-Severn" group, and is managed by English heritage.

Wayland’s Smithy on the Ridgeway

Ancient Britain was a landmass on the northwest of the continent of Europe first occupied by humans c. 800,000 years ago prior to it becoming an island c. 6000 BCE due to flooding which separated it from the mainland. #History #RomanBritain #LongBarrow #Gildas #HistoryFacts https://www.worldhistory.org/britain/
Unlike Wayland's Smithy, the burial chambers here are easily accessible to visitors. Bones, pottery & stone implements found within were dated between 2600-3000BC.
Standing atop the long barrow, Silbury Hill (a #PreHistoric artificial chalk mound) can be be clearly seen across the fields.
What a place!
Wayland's Smithy yesterday for #StandingStoneSunday. A marvellous, if much restored, #Neolithic long barrow in Oxfordshire, lying just off the Ridgeway long distance path. I didn't have a horse that needed shoeing, but legend says this is the place for a magical smithing job.

For #TombTuesday this is Windmill Tump Neolithic long barrow near Rodmarton in Gloucestershire.
It's been damaged by excavation, but has the remains of several chambers.
#Folklore tells of a tunnel running from the chambers (I don't know where to) and a fabled golden coffin.
Visited January 2010.
A long barrow is a class of Middle Neolithic (approximately 3500-2700 BCE) burial monument which is found extensively throughout the British Isles and is related to other forms of contemporary tomb-building traditions of north-western Europe, particularly that of northern France.
