49 years ago on December 19, 1974, Altair 8800 microcomputer kits go on sale.
The Altair 8800, featuring the Intel 8080 microprocessor with 8-bit capacity, was initially offered as a DIY kit for under $400. Input was via toggle switches, and output through LEDs on the front panel.
Despite its basic design, the Altair 8800 inspired Microsoft founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen to create the first microcomputer Basic for it. The Altair's success exceeded expectations, with over 2,000 units sold by the end of 1975
