Craig Federighi Explains Why Apple Won't Merge iPad and Mac: 'We Don't Want to Build Sporks'

The web did indeed win…

Even if you think you made up your mind about Electron years ago, I suggest watching the entire video and considering whether this crusade against more accessible, more frequently updated (and often more performant) desktop software still makes sense in 2025.

Is Electron Really That Bad? – MacStories

https://www.macstories.net/linked/is-electron-really-that-bad/

There are 3 points:

  1. I am glad that some of the Apple die-hards are finally getting to see what the web is actually capable of and hopefully this means more adoption of web technologies
  2. This is also very much possible on the Mac because of how insane the M-processors are.
  3. The chrome team indeed works its butt off to make sure performance is eked out in every platform.

This is yet another reason why the iPad OS really needs to make more of the web come alive. =(

Don’t forget that John Siracusa was on to this when he discussed rendering and scrolling was way smoother in WebKit compared to AppKit

Was 'forced' to rely on @macstories articles and podcasts for entertainment while in Manhattan and I'm hooked on RSS.

Praise be to He (‘He' being open protocols’).

I think we'll primarily only see cases like this - #AppStories #MacStories - doing a 180 on their AI stance because "we have a website that needs to have content" - isn't this exactly what Apple and other Big Tech companies are doing on a larger scale? "we have shareholders that need to make money", scruples be damned. it seems tech and the surrounding tech culture is accelerating towards complete "#enshittification" at a much more alarming pace. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Would it be weird to subscribe to @macstories when I don't have a iPhone?

Can’t help but wonder how much photos search was tested in the review.

In Brandon Butch’s iOS18 Review (Movie) he clearly shows searching for cat on a chair doesn’t work in iOS17 but does on iOS18. That’s just 1 anecdont but it’s one that Federico Viticci didn’t touch at all.

You guys recommended the app called “Diele” a while ago, and it does not work at all anymore. In fact, it has been pulled off of the App Store. What is that all about?

To reinforce and encourage Mastodon as the go-to place for journalism,
we’re launching a new feature today.
You will notice that underneath some links shared on Mastodon,
the author byline can be clicked to open the author’s associated fediverse account,
right in the app.
This highlights writers and journalists that are active on the fediverse,
and makes it easier than ever to follow them and keep up with their future work
—potentially across different publications.

Writers often work with different publishers over the span of their careers,
but Mastodon is the perfect platform to amass a loyal audience that you, as the author,
truly own, and can take with you across the fediverse.

Some of the first websites adopting this feature are The #Verge, #MacStories, and #MacRumors.
If you have an account on mastodon.social
and use the web version or one of our official mobile apps,
you will see associated fediverse accounts underneath their articles,
no matter who posts them.

Of course, it’s also part of Mastodon’s API,
so we expect to see support among the vast array of third party apps for Mastodon as well.
All Mastodon features are always available to all third-party apps
since the API that powers the web version and the official mobile apps is the exact same for everyone.

Federico's incredible iPad Pro setup is a must read. It's not for everyone but it gets a ton of uniqueness points from me.

How I Modded My iPad Pro with a Screen Protector, iPhone Holder, and Magnetic Stereo Speakers

Federico is someone whom I admire who’s stuck with the iPad Pro lifestyle (although he does have a Mac that is often handy for him). He makes some interesting choices (read: not for everyone) to his setup. This one is bonkers – it’s not for me. However, it’s also very interesting and unique.

And not having all the shit Meta's been up to (and still is) mean NOTHING.

Threads federating _should_ lead to creators feeling it's _even safer_ to invest in open and ethical platforms.

#MacStories has shown the way, by creating their own instance (macstories.net/news/macstories) - and I think publications like The Verge should do the same.

You'd think publications have been enough burned by Meta, X and #Google to not want to go straight back into their fold??

@club @viticci @macstories Nice! I literally just bought 2 of the 4 apps recently; all are really nice if you’re in the market for any of these types of apps. ClubMacstories always coming through with the benefits! ;-)

Anyone know how to check what app discounts you get with ? I checked their plans and pricing page but couldn't find the details.
