In my goal to live with 1 gig of cell data a month I have discovered an iPhone on iOS 17.x will use over 30% of the data.
Upgrading to 18.x drops the usage to minuscule by comparison. Huh, Do I really want to know what changed?

My Duolingo addicted husband has unlimited data so I just hotspot once a day to use apps. But … we are in a rural area. If you stand in a certain corner of the room with the phone a certain way you’ll get scent of a signal.
The house WiFi is on vacation until April. Best decision ever if you are trying to encourage human interaction over tech.
Since the iPhone ate 30-32% of my 1 Gig / month data goal with “System Services” I switched to a Nokia flip phone. It doesn’t support ESIM.
Our $6/month phone plan provider made it stupid simple to convert to a physical SIM card. That means the iPhone is WiFi based but could switch back if warranted.
Wish KaiOS supported the Signal app though.
Yesterday I was late checking in here at solarscene. I had a total of two minutes to browse the latest.
I did find it fun but I wasn’t disappointed after the 00:02:01 minutes elapsed.
I visit the library more. To update/sync devices. To check out DVDs to watch later. To convey my thanks for this public service.
Anyone else buy the $2 DVDs at thrift stores only to return them after watching? We don’t ask for a refund. We think of it as an alternate library
I leave my phone at home most days. Why does it need to know what I’m doing?
I have an unused #Hologram SIM card that I will probably retire. I thought it would be a good alternative to draw less data. Now I see that my iPhone will eat up my allotment there with system services alone.
Sorry, catching up since I have Wi-Fi at the moment - Questioning my use of Google Voice.
Before I loved it because I could access it anywhere on any device. So if I lost the phone, no big deal. It was just a container.
Do you use it? Did you drop it? I’m listening

In my quest to attempt to get through a month using 1 Gig or less I realize that I live next door to someone that leaves their TV streaming 24/7 and I no longer wonder why.
I am thankful for Solarcene.community that has a fabulous splash page if the system is currently unpowered.
I have other fedi accounts but this is the only one that gets a routine visit.
Was I foolish in setting a minimal data goal of 1 Gig for a month? Apparently Apple thinks so. System Services used nearly a third of my self induced gigabyte limit.
I didn’t make my goal in November. I used 2 Gig. I’ll try again in December. I’m finding I have more time for walks. For in person conversations. For mending clothes that have only been waiting 12 years.

Living on a #Solar instance does stop me from picking up the device to see what the latest is. Also makes me stop to think (or remember) if something is really worthwhile posting.
Here it is early morning. By the time something vaguely interesting happens the #AccessNode is in for the night.
I actually enjoy that.
4. You can help with the experiment both by providing a bit of traffic on the instance but also providing feedback etc.
5. The community is small and friendly (okay there are 2 of us 😃 right now)
6. We made a mistake with the image script early on so it’s a bit roulette whether avatar images are actually correct - just adds a little bit of chaos!
