Reminder (for me as much as anyone):

Set the usage limits.

On everything.

Even if "We hardly use any data"

Even if "We will never exceed a rate of x"

Even if "It would be a waste of time"

Set the usage limits.

---

(I previously posted on this $1,000 mistake I made, but here's the final logging data volume along with our typical usage. This hurt.)

Two charts showing the logging usage per day over a 2-month period. The previous 2-month total was 77.4 Gigabytes. The total for the pictured 2-month period is approximately 1.1 Terabytes, mostly accumulated over 6 days or so. This equated to about $1,000. Ouch. To the left and right side of the bump in the chart, the values are nearly zero for the other dates.

In my goal to live with 1 gig of cell data a month I have discovered an iPhone on iOS 17.x will use over 30% of the data.

Upgrading to 18.x drops the usage to minuscule by comparison. Huh, Do I really want to know what changed?

Question for iPhone geeks out there: Browser (Safari / Chrome) eats tons of data. Since iOS has only per-app breakdown of data usage, and not per domain, it is impossible to tell _what_ is actually eating the data. Is there a way to get _per domain_ analysis of data usage on iPhone? Even if it's just limited to the default browser?

I run a tool on my router called vnStat that shows how much data I use every day, week, month and so on.

Here is the past several months of usage.

To note - I work from home and watch far too much Youtube

Any idea what is going on here? Apparently on 26-Nov-2021 we consumed negative 32.62GB of data on our Orcon Internet NZ Fibre connection. That's not even for uploads, that's showing a negative amount of downloaded data. 🤔 Huh? #orcon #datausage

Datally - Google app to monitor and control data usage by other apps. Good Idea. But, but these features are already in the OS, what gives?

Evidently this is the newb UI version, because people don't use (or know how to use) the features buried in Settings. Jitterbug here we come!
