#Katharinenportal for #MonochromeMonday

This #Baroque portal in #Magdeburg once belonged to the medieval St Katharine's Church (St.-Katharinen-Kirche). The church, destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and rebuilt in the 1660s, was gutted by fire in the Second World War. Despite this, its ruins provided shelter to many in January 1945 during the city's most devastating bombing raid.
In the 1960s, the ruins were demolished, as socialism had no place for religion. Only this fragment of the church's west portal remained. The sculpture of St Catherine (Katharina in German) was relocated to another church, while the portal itself was stored by a construction company.
In 2016, the portal was restored and reinstalled near its original location on #BreiterWeg, one of Magdeburg's main avenues. Today, it stands between modern shops and high-rise buildings. Poor Katharina may seem out of place here, but she serves as a poignant reminder of the past and the history she has witnessed since her creation in 1668.

P.S., I found out that by default, ocrmypdf uses (lossless) #JBIG2 compression. That's why it was so well compressed. Also, the resultant PNG file at the end (which was basically the same PNG file that went into the PDF) was converted from JBIG — pdfimages converts images, it doesn't extract them in their natively stored format (but a -list will show you what the native format is). Also, I think pdfimages -all will just export the native format, whatever it is, but I haven't tried that yet.

We watched the second half of the match from our in-room sauna (hehe), and what a nail-biting finale it was. I've never played handball in my life and I couldn't care less about #sports, but it's brilliant to watch. 🤾‍♀️

For #MonochromeMonday, here's a snapshot from kiddo's last handball tournament. Most of these 8-year-olds still have no clue what they're doing on the court, but kiddo's team won all of their 4 matches, so there's that. 🤭 Luckily, it's all about fun at this age. This shot is from a warm-up session, as I didn't want to show any faces.
