A reaction from me to today's article on Ferdinand von Sommer by Professor Alexandra Ludewig (UWA) in The Conversation:

Genius or charlatan? The strange tale of a 19th-century polymath who left a trail of controversy across colonial Australia.

Since one of my professional associations just sent out the official notice, I'll send out my own public note about the passing of the great historian Duane Smith. Among his myriad books, he wrote perhaps the first in-depth study connecting #envhist and mining. A beloved teacher at Fort Lewis College, Duane was all around nice guy who was always fun to see at #mininghistory conferences.

Proof that I actually presented at this conference and didn’t just wander around mine sites. Here is my #envhist #mininghistory presentation on the Bingham Canyon Mine.

@nytimes.com published a great list of 25 photos “that defined the modern age,” including one of the most famous images in #mininghistory. Judges came from “fine art and reportage.” One is a curator/art historian, but no other #historians were consulted? nytimes.com/2024/06/03/t-magaz

Back from another #MiningHistory Association meeting—this time in Park City, Utah. First: special event for a few of us—a luncheon hosted by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Rone Tempest (who is working on a history of his family’s involvement in mining) at the Alta Club in downtown Salt Lake City.
