#Multiculturalism

2025-05-27

One thing that I find iffy about mainstream conceptions of #multiculturalism is how they offer an easy pass to anything that can be called #religion. Within any community there are nay-sayers; they are just as legitimate in their nay-saying as are believers in their affirmations of belief. In my view, even more so. When I say that #monotheism is a vile aberration, that is not disrespect to any "culture'.

I heart my local fruit and veg shops. There's an Italian/Macedonian one, and an Afghan one, and a few a Vietnamese ones, and a couple I don't know the origin story of.

This week my cooking is leaning Mediterranean, and I got rapa, fennel, pomegranates, and fresh borlotti beans, among the usual bits and bobs.

For those from elsewhere, or who don't shop, you can very rarely find these things at a supermarket in Australia.

⏳ End: 7 września 2025 16:00
📍 Location: ADA Puławska, Puławska 37, 02-508, Warszawa

WARSAW INDEPENDENT BOOKFAIR 2025

„Im więcej wiesz, tym lepiej działasz”

Zapraszamy na IX edycję Warsaw Independent Bookfair, który odbędzie się w Warszawie w terminie 6-7.09.2025

Warsaw Independent Bookfair 2025 to przestrzeń wolnej myśli i kultury, będąco narzędziem sprzeciwu wobec cichej cenzury, monopolizacji i kapitalistycznych ograniczeń rynku książki. Działamy, aby wspierać twórców i twórczynie, którzy odrzucają komercyjne kompromisy, bronią autonomii swoich przekazów i budują alternatywne modele dystrybucji oraz współpracy. Zapraszamy was do aktywnego uczestnictwa w wydarzeniu.

Deklamujcie manifesty!
Spotykajcie się i dyskutujcie!
Prezentujcie nowe rozwiązania!
Bądźcie kreatywni i kreatywne!

Zapraszamy!

WARSAW INDEPENDENT BOOKFAIR 2025

‘The more you know, the better you act’.

We would like to invite you to the 9th edition of Warsaw Independent Bookfair, which will take place in Warsaw on 6-7.09.2025

Warsaw Independent Bookfair 2025 is a space for free thought and culture, a tool for opposing the silent censorship, monopolisation and capitalist restrictions of the book market. We act to support authors and creators who reject commercial compromises, defend the autonomy of their messages and build alternative models of distribution and collaboration. The event is open to all people who believe in the value of self-organisation, grassroots solidarity and anarchist ideas as a world-changing force. In the past years we have discussed a lot about these emerging issues. We recognise that their solution requires global awareness, solidarity between creators and readers, and support for independent cultural initiatives. As we have done in recent years, we want not only to deepen our discussions and critiques, but also to develop solutions. We invite you to actively participate in the event.

Declare manifestos!
Meet and discuss!
Present new solutions!
Be creative and imaginative!
We are open to your suggestions!

The event will be accompanied by meetings (also online) to discuss topics currently preoccupying independent publishers and grassroots initiatives that fit in with the idea of the ninth Independent Bookfair. It is open to an equality message that includes the voice of the excluded. It is a space to share our experiences together, learn from each other, respectfully discuss alternatives and take a critical look at contemporary reality.

The previous fair was attended by publishers, collectives and individuals representing a variety of backgrounds from both Poland and abroad. The event also attracted quite a few book lovers and we hope that this year will be similar.

Our distinctive feature is also that we do not charge for a stand. If you really want to come and the only obstacle for you is finances, write to us – we will try to work something out together. The fair is free for visitors.

As we have a limited number of stands, we ask you to register in advance. We are waiting for applications until 1 June 2025 at warsawbookfair@riseup.net. You can send any collaboration proposals, questions and comments about the event to the same email address.

We look forward to hearing from you!

He looked at me and he said "Kosher food.... What exactly are you looking for?"

me: "Kosher food?"

him: "Exactly What is Kosher food."

me: (a little stunned and unsure how to answer) "Food for Jews?"

him: Well we go these crackers in.... (pointing to a display of matzoh I hadn't seen). Is there anything you're looking for specifically?

me: Well that's good (I hadn't seen the matzoh). What about gefilte fish, or borcht, or bamba, or....?

him: *looks blankly* I'm sorry I'm not very.... I don't have a very... broad... experience with....

me: (really uncomfortable at this point) "It's okay. It's okay really. It's fine" and I walked away (out of the store).

I believe the guy when he says he doesn't know what kosher food is, but he was head (?) of grocery, and even though he didn't do anything wrong, it was a lesson in how important understanding can be in making someone feel welcome/unwelcome.

I had this experience Saturday and I'm only now processing it.

I want to be clear that I don't think anyone in this story is antisemitic, but one doesn't need to be hateful to make someone uncomfortable, and that should hopefully be universally applicable.

I was doing very last minute shopping for Passover supplies, and we went to a supermarket in West Vancouver, the City Market in Park Royal. I went to the International foods section, there was no Jewish/Israeli section. No broths/soups/matzoh ball mix, borcht, bamba, etc.

I went to the Customer Service desk and asked, and the woman suggested I go to "Fresh Foods". I asked why fresh foods, and it turned out she had no idea what kosher food was, so she was guessing. She mentioned they had hallal food (which was good to hear but not what I needed). She called over (head of?) grocery and explained I was looking for "kosher or Greek food", and I explained no Greek, just kosher food.

And let’s also be frank,

Peter Dutton shouldn’t be apologising to just the Lebanese Muslim community. Most certainly one of the first. But also many others.
The many things he has said over the past two decades has cause unneeded anxiety, frustration, hurt and stress to many other ethnic communities in Australia.

There’s a phrase in Japan that goes along the lines of ‘Lowering your head (in apology) has meaning when you are in a position of power(/privilege)’.

The incapacity to openly (and repeatedly) apologise, when considered from this perspective, shouts of arrogance and contempt. I also believe this is also a universal belief.
