#NaturalBridge

Day 3 of my #MotoCamping trip. After the previous days adventures I decided I needed a day to hike rather than ride. Started the day off with a quick ride into town for provisions and then went to Natural Bridge State Park, where I hiked the Original trail up to Balanced Rock and then the Low Gap trail up to the Natural Bridge. Both are considered moderate by the locals, but I think by anyone else's standards they would be better described as reminiscent of the path two hobbits took in order to sneak into Mordor. Complete with stone staircases.

On our way north today, the highway had a major crash, so we veered off to a park we have wanted to see. This is #NaturalBridge in #VA

Weren't dressed for hiking (thinking this was a car day) but trudged down the 135 steps to the bottom of the bridge. Had been told that icicles on the bridge might have the trail closed, and it was, so only got a few ok pictures.

This natural structure is 200' tall, taller than the Statue of Liberty (remember her?), Niagara Falls and smaller than the Washington Monument. (They had a sign, so I learned something.)

This photo was taken at about 2pm on Monday, and the sun is only slanting in on about half of the gully formed by Cedar Creek. It is amazing what water can do to limestone... given several hundred thousand years.

The photo shows both sides of a steep gorge, with a small creek (about 30' across?) in the center, and a pathway edged in a low rock wall on the right, curving down to pass under the bridge itself.

The structure of the bridge looks to be also about 30' thick, so from where this was taken you can see blue sky both above and below it. The length is probably a similar dimension. I don't think people are allowed to walk on it, which is a very good thing. There are a few small trees growing on the bridge itself, as there are on both top sides of the cliffs.

It looks a little like a very large dumbbell.Closer to the bridge and in black and white, this photo captures some of the icicles and sheets of ice coating the walls of the cliff under the bridge itself.

The photo is taken directly in front of a sawhorse blocking the trail forward that would go under the structure. On the blockade is a sign which says "Trail Closed, Falling Ice" and shows a stick figure person struggling to walk, and about to be impaled from above by a row of huge ice daggers.

Good idea, we stopped right here. Many pieces of ice fell and shattered on the trail and rocks during the 20 minutes we were enjoying the area.

Natural Bridge State Park in Natural Bridge, VA, seen from below the bridge. This natural ancient rock bridge was visited by several early US presidents, including Washington and Jefferson. It still stands today and is a natural wonder.

🌿 The Power of Nature in the Canadian Rockies 🌿

The Natural Bridge in Yoho National Park is a stunning example of how water can shape even the hardest rock over thousands of years. Carved by the Kicking Horse River, this natural wonder is a testament to the relentless force and beauty of nature.

A place to pause, admire, and take in the breathtaking landscape of the Canadian Rockies. Have you been here before?

When I saw "Natural Bridge" on the map, I had to go see it. It's off Bridge Gulch Road in Bridge Gulch, so I'm not the only one obsessed. (Plaque words are in the alt.)

Under Massacre Natural Bridge.

Looking through a tunnel carved by a stream through limestone, a light colored rock. Limestone hangs heavy across a wide space with jaunty carve outs. Fallen rocks from the carve outs rest below the spaces. A little light at the other end of the tunnel is visible and walls lean in on either side of the wide space. Besides the fallen rocks, the ground is gravelly. The space in the tunnel looks cramped vertically from this angle although no crouching is required to pass through it.A shrine or memorial built for those who were massacred in this place for no reason.

A tree with a wooden plaque of a burl hung on it. Much is written on it. A plastic flower and other small items are hung in the bark. A shelf is below it containing bottled water, an empty beer can, and small sweets and flavorings.

Plaque reads: Historical Site of an Indian Massacre
On April 23, 1852 an entire Wintu Rancherie were killed by a Weaverville posse. Approx. 150 people, many women and children. Not one White man was killed and only a couple of children spared.
Kok-chee-shum-chee do you know their names? Do their spirits soar through your caves? There's no one left to let us know. Could you tell us in an echo? The names of those killed long ago? Oh how we will even know?
(Kok-chee-shum-chee is the name of the place.)Getting a little view of the bridge from above and to the side.

Trees obscure the stretch of limestone across the top of the natural bridge. More limestone rises on the right and an outcrop is right in front.Looking up from the north edge of the tunnel of the bridge.

Dark shadow of jagged rocks dominates the top and dark shadow of conifer trees dominate the bottom. In between is blue sky with tiny puffs of white cloud.

Hickman Bridge doesn't look 125 feet tall when viewed from the backside. That is because Ranger Sarah is standing on rocks that are well above the wash that runs under the bridge.
