A more general example might be, which window you should be looking at in the first place.
For me, one of the features most sorely lost in the transformation of the NeXT UI to MacOS was the clear distinction between main, key, and “other” windows/panels…
As an artist who builds and references color palettes across apps and Apple platforms, the #pastelapp by @stroughtonsmith replaces and improves the much-missed color picker Frank DeLoupe that I first started using in 2012. Pastel manages color palettes across all my platforms. The Mac version even includes an eyedropper to pick any color on screen just like Frank DeLoupe. Immediate purchase.
My first palette represents #NeXTstep's original 2-bit colors. Old habits die hard.
given that apparently the nextstep machine-independent kernel sources where available on floppies, does anyone know where there is a copy of them?

Operating System Friction
One operating system lets you think clearly. Another creates constant friction. For some, that difference isn't preference—it's necessity.Today I finished installing NeXTSTEP 3.3 just to make this #Gopher capture. Props to the @OmniGroup people for still providing a 68k build of OmniWeb on their site 30 years later.

#RetroComputing #NeXTSTEP
A fascinating look back at 1994: Bud Tribble explaining the pivotal alliance between NeXT and Sun Microsystems.
It’s incredible to read how OpenStep was pitched as the "mature" object-oriented solution back then—laying the groundwork for the architecture we still use today in macOS. Real engineering history.

I should be working but I compiled previous (the NeXT Cube emulator) on my M1 Air (on Asahi/Fedora).
System 3.3 install takes a while but I guess this is correct for these days...

NeXT even had fax…
(😊)
Fascinating insight into the early commercial days.
And for anyone who wants to know what their system really cost!
Photos show NeXT internal selling guide, including section on Looking Forward which states:
“We offer powerful networking capabilities. We even offer fax capabilities.”
This morning our boy got told that he was accepted at his prefered high school and he is SUPER made up and so are we.!
To say we're putting everything we can behind him is an understatement, but it's literally what makes me feel at peace as a parent.

This is obviously a longshot, but: I’m trying to boot OpenStep on a SPARCstation 20. I have the optical media. I can “boot cdrom” and get the installer going, but then I get:
Loading OPENSTEP
Reading OPENSTEP configuration
Starting OPENSTEP
Level 15 interrupt
…and I’m back at the “ok” prompt. Anyone know what a “level 15 interrupt” is?
[Edit: it seems to be a broad hardware failure error, and the current suspect is ram; see replies.]
#MacOS has been like this for more than a decade. There used to be a fairly decent manual page set on-line, much like what the BSDs and Illumos have to this day. But they all got deleted after lying unmaintained, and it became apparent years ago what Apple's attitude to doco was.
