#OVMS

Finally!

Jeztt abwarten undbeobachten.

Update: Spook to the rescue!
Damit war es easy.

Sieht gut aus.

BTW, if you don't know what these things were that I was asking the community about in hopes of a response from the Telo Trucks rep:

OVMS = OpenVehicles Monitoring System - It's something that could, effectively, replace all of the connected services many vehicle manufacturers provide, but allows you to own every aspect of it, provided the vehicle is adequately supported. This includes being able to view your vehicle's state of charge, stop and start charging, lock and unlock doors remotely, start and stop climate remotely, see various aspects of vehicle health and performance, etc. It can integrate with ABRP for intelligent EV navigation, and it can integrate with Home Assistant for building automations. Using the public servers for remote access is entirely optional.

OpenPilot - Intelligent navigation system that provides some driving automation, including intelligent cruise control, and some very basic autonomous driving. Provided it has support for the vehicle, it can use the vehicle's own systems for making decisions.

As you can see, all of the responses I noted have nothing to do with any of this. Reddit is just a cesspool of hate and ignorance.

OVMS actually helped me track down a problem with my 12v battery through its logging capabilities. It also assists me in tracking energy usage and habits. But it has limited support for my current EV so it has limited capability. For now, it can't fully replace Kia Connect.

I have no interest in autonomous driving. But I find adaptive/intelligent cruise control to be tremendously useful for longer drives. This still requires my attention, but significantly reduces the cognitive load of driving long distances, particularly during traffic congestion.

Both of these projects are Open Source. OVMS has a criminally low amount of attention, though, in a space where people would LOVE to break away from manufacturer connected services being locked behind paywalls.

@briankrebs The only thing I can really think of is to disable the mobile connection (remove SIM card?) and use something like OVMS. Unfortunately, the maturity of OVMS is very low and primarily targets EVs so if you're looking for a solution for an ICE vehicle…yeah.

Another new OVMS firmware. I got my module stable so let’s see if this fixes things.

I think my OVMS broke. I did a firmware update and…yeah.

I’m having really bad luck with firmware updates.

Though this seems to be manifesting after the firmware update, I’m not entirely sure that’s the root cause, though.

Got the car up and running again. Confirmed it received 5+ hours of charging during the HV battery charging cycle. Logging shows it faded from around 12.8V to 12.1V over a few hours, then sunk to around 5V.

I was not planning on dealing with this today but here we are.

I really wish projects like OVMS would get more attention, maybe funding and support, etc. I would love to have a full OVMS implementation for my car, to the point that I could locate and remove the SIM card for Kia's connected services.

For the things that do function, OVMS has been way more reliable and trustworthy.

#OpenVehicle #OVMS #Smart #SmartEQ #SmartEQControl #SmartForTwo

Orrrrrr. 😑 Kündigung der smart EQ control Services zum 31.12.2024. Und dann? Alternativen? Selber Modul einbauen? Jemand schon ’n Plan oder ’ne Idee (Stichwort: #OVMS)? 🤔 #eAuto #SmartForTwo #SmartEQControl #Mercedes #Smart #EQControl #2G #3G #Mobilfunknetz

It seems Kia finally fixed notifications with Connect.

Sorta.

For the first time ever, I got charge almost complete and charge complete notifications. Historically, I depended on OVMS to handle this.

Though, shortly after charge complete, I got charge interrupted. Well, yeah, charge complete means it stops charging!

Having the #OVMS module back in my car and seeing the data, I think #Kia may have leaned a little too aggressive with the parked 12V maintenance routines in the latest VCU update for the #NiroEV.

Being able to log information about how my car is functioning is pretty valuable.

I can see that it's being way more active in managing the 12v battery since the VCU update, and it's doing so at the proper voltage. I would say this is a really good thing, and a massive change from prior behavior that allowed the battery to just...die.

Took a drive and confirmed that the charging system does keep the recombination voltage during the drive.

So that basically confirms my feeling that the previous behavior was a flaw.

I might still need a new battery though because it might have some damage. It passed Kia’s test, but it definitely doesn’t have anywhere close to the capacity it should. As of now, battery maintenance looks more aggressive so it should be fine until then.

With #OVMS back in place, I'm observing an undocumented change with the VCU update: The car might finally be sending an appropriate charge to the accessory battery in drive mode. Previously, it was only sending around 13.2v, and only supplying the 14.8v needed for recombination during charging sessions.

So they may not have only updated the brake light behavior.

I need to drive a bit to confirm though.

OVMS is reinstalled.

If you're curious why I removed it temporarily, it's to avoid the dealership being dicks. It's illegal for them to claim it voids the warranty, but it wouldn't stop them trying. And I just don't have the spoons to fight it.
