#ObsidianPlugin

2025-06-14

Just submitted my External PDF plugin to the Obsidian team.

Getting to grips with GitHub pull requests and then making sure that what I was submitting met the requirements took a bit of time. I don't think it'll get accepted straight away and I'll be given some review comment tasks to work on. I think this fills a small gap in functionality that is missing from Obsidian and might be useful to someone else. Which is why I'm sharing.

Just wrote my first Obsidian plugin. And it works! It allows me to embed pdf files external to the Obsidian vault - which couldn't seem to be done... until now. I've called it "Obsdian External PDF Plugin" (it does what it says on the tin). This is something I've been asking for help with for ages online without luck - so I decided to try and sort it out myself. Yay!

@dtl Probably not what you're looking for exactly but: Obsidian.md has a plugin which automatically submits links in your text to the Internet Archive and then changes your text accordingly.

You know when you remember someone in your timeline recommending a plugin for an app, then some time later you need to reinstall but can't find the recommendation again?

I need an #ObsidianPlugin that does good Readability checks?

I put some time into organizing my #ObsidianMD vault more. I'm early enough into using it that this wasn't too painful. I'm basically nudging it more toward keeping my notes organized with the #PARA method.

The big ugly part that I'm going to have a harder time reconciling is the public folder where everything under https://magnus919.com/notes lives. I should have been using slugs in the front matter. That would have helped avoid a lot of pain.

The other thing I wish I'd thought to do differently: my blog notes use tags: property, but everything else in my vault uses topics:. I might be in for some pain before I get that part sorted to my liking.

I picked up Tiago Forte's book "Building a Second Brain. And also "Digital Zettelkasten: Principles, Methods, & Examples" by David Kadavy.

And since I'm using the #ObsidianPlugin "Apple Books - Import Highlights" my notes and highlights will be in my vault (but now in a subfolder under _3 - Resources).

Hmmm, is there an #ObsidianMD plugin(read: rube Goldberg setup) that, when I make a new @ Person note, it will automatically check Wikipedia for a page similar and fill in information from their page and infoblock?

Also still looking for good Wikipedia importing plugins in general, likely just a good Wikipedia format to markdown importer :BoostOK:

Just wanted to brag that I just had an open source pull request I made THREE years ago merged by the maintainer.

I'm slightly terrified based off how much I've learned about TypeScript since, but honestly the code wasn't as bad as I remember feeling about it (it not getting merged definitely led to that dejected feeling just a lil'..)

For all you #Obsidian users out there, I discovered the magic of footnotes, as well as a community #ObsidianPlugin for them that makes them a breeze to use. I was able to use it in a recent preemchro.me post and now that I've discovered them, I AM UNSTOPPABLE!!!

The plugin is the "Footnote Shortcuts" by Alexis Rondeau and Micha Brugger (just browse the community plugins and search for "footnotes" and you'll find it), and it allows you to set auto-numbered or named footnotes with just a hotkey AND immediately takes you down to the footnote to add the text; hitting the hot key again takes you back to the original spot you were before. Pretty handy!

Plus, Quartz 4 handles the footnotes by adding a header at compilation time as well as implementing a popup link when you mouse over the footnote tag to show you the footnote without having to scroll down. Again, pretty handy!

Now I just have to decide if I'm going to use footnotes just for citations or also TODOs and other information, or continue to use notes/info/warning boxes to call out "flavor text". I'll probably end up using a mix depending on how I'm feeling when I write a given essay.

The options are endless!

What is the best #obsidian plug-in for fixing the silly way obsidian handles tabs. By default it works like a browser where whatever file I click on in the file tree replaces the current file I'm editing. I want it to work like an IDE where different files open in different tabs and if I click on the same file a second time it goes back to the tab where I originally opened it. It's a terrible default, but some plug-ins that seem to fix it seem overly complicated #ObsidianPlugin @obsidian
