A bit more of painting this week. The difference is that I got to share the hobby with my wife this time!
Those here are the Dwarven heroes from our coming Moria campaign for One Ring.
Not ready yet, but almost there!
The #OneRing from #TheLordOfTheRings in #Blender. This actually took quite a lot of effort to get looking good. I tried a handful of different approaches, from boolean modifiers to normal maps, to actually sculpting the letters in (which did not go well).
Normal maps didn't get the look of depth I wanted. I wouldn't mind something like parallax maps, but that's not an easy thing to achieve in Blender. In order to get the displacement good enough, I had to crank subdivisions way up. This is 16.7 million triangles. I tried some approaches with some selective subdivision, but I couldn't get the seam between the high and low resolution looking just the way I wanted it to. My video card doesn't have nearly enough memory for this, so I had to do it on the CPU. This took about 2 hours to render. I added a simple glare via the compositor. I ran a 2.5 minute one first with denoising, and I have to say, not a lot of difference between the short and long version. Blender's denoiser is pretty good.

The One Ring inscription (Part 2)
Image 1 shows the second One Ring inscription Tolkien sent to the printer. But he was still unhappy with it. So he asked to send another one.
Image 2 shows the well know inscription as printed in books. The original art sent by Tolkien to the printer is lost.
The inadvertently changed tengwa is circled in blue. Tolkien became later aware of his mistake (before publication) but accepted it.

Spent a fun time with #TheOneRing2e making a scholar ranger of the North. I'm also considering homebrews and variants as I go. Need to get a copy of the #pbta #thefellowship to compare and contrast. I'n all in with #onering (at least solo play so far), but I've been hankering to consider #Glorantha, #SpeedRune and some of the related writings of Ted Gioia on historical music, etc. to brew or create something a little different. studying #goodsocietyrpg too. #ttrpgDesign #ttrpghomebrew #ttrpg

Just finished listening to the BBC 1968 radio play adaptation of #TheHobbit.
The #OneRing sure does a great job of not attracting immediate concern by #Gandalf or #Elrond or any Elves skilled in magic as Bilbo carries it in close proximity to them.
No feeling a #DisturbanceInTheForce here Luke.
I liked this adaptation. #JimMoriarty didn't overdo the character he played. (Gandalf)
Younger listeners can hopefully adapt to the absences of car-chases and dwarf/elf romance.

I'd imagine maglor would be incredibly easy for the ring to corrupt, since he's a) extremely powerful b) equally mentally unstable c) has lost pretty much everything and d) is also fighting the Oath 24/7.
so the ring temptation would probably be something along the lines of lifting the Doom / Oath and freeing feanor from the halls early (aka vala-esque power). and if it worked he would end up going on an Oath-and-Ring-fueled crusade to protect everyone he loves
and then of course elrond has to deal with Ring Maglor going to mordor to punch sauron in the face, because while that's good in the short term, the long term ring corruption would be very very bad if maglor kept using it to kill ainur, and there are like three people on the entire continent who have any sort of chance against Regular Maglor, much less Evil Ringlord Maglor.
