Postman brought me a boat-load of bus bars for the low voltage wiring in the #EV #Mustang this morning. (I may have gone overboard). There’s three for the engine bay, three for under the dash, and three to go in the boot (permanent 12v, ignition switched 12v, and ground).

They’re much chunkier than I thought. They feel good and solid though.

Still trying to decide how to bolt the side panels on. I could just drill a hole and weld a nut to the inside. I’d kind of like to use rivnuts though. But I’d need to countersink them so they were flush.

I think I’m going to use the old fuel tank after all. I changed my mind about putting the batteries in the fuel tank spot. It’ll help to preserve the outside appearance of the car being unchanged.

Here I’ve just dumped 5L of evaporust in there. I’ve been rotating it every day or so to get a different corner. Should make cleaning it up much less labour intensive.

Fuel tank with top cut off. Brown murky liquid in the bottom. It’s tipped over slight to one side to the liquid reaches up the walls on one side. The exposed areas are green/yellow.

There’s plenty of room for everything - contactors, mid pack disconnect, fuse, HV socket, vent, and LV socket.

I’ll put the sockets on the side I think. Possibly will weld in a little bracket to hold them. The side panels (and top) will be 1mm sheet that will bolt on. They’ll just go around the sockets.

There will be a high voltage junction box sitting on top of the battery box so will leave the top relatively clear.

This morning I did the first test stack up to see if everything fit. There’s always that worry in the back of your head that you’ve not left enough room somewhere and while everything might be able to fit actually getting it in might be impossible.

Over the Christmas break I turned my battery ‘tray’ into a battery box. Well, something that more resembles a box. It has three dimensions now at least. It’s not perfect, but it’s reasonably square.

Brought the #Mustang to #DublinMaker over the weekend to exhibit it as part of the #OpenInverter stand. Loads of interest in #EVConversion from adults and kids alike. It was a wonderful event. There were five of us on the stand and we were swamped for the whole two days. It was great fun!

In all my excitement arranging things in the engine bay, I forgot to check out how things line up on the underside of the car. Took a few snaps this morning and it's looking really well. The rib which supported the old transmission lines up perfectly with the rear mount on the gs300h CVT. I still need to move it back a little to clear the steering parts on the front, but it's still basically bang on.

Looking up at the underside of the transmission tunnel on a 1965 Ford Mustang. A CVT from a Lexus gs300h is in the transmission tunnel, sitting atop a wheely trolley and a stack of wood. There is a rib running from one frame rail up and around the inside of the transmission tunnel and over to the other frame rail. The rear mounting point of the CVT lines up perfectly with this rib.

Still no steering or brakes. ... or anything else really. But it's a symbolic milestone.

Interior of a home garage. Shelves line the walls, packed with all sort of stuff. The bare chassis of a 1965 Ford Mustang sits in the middle of the garage. It is missing its engine, fenders, glass, doors and so on. Its sitting on four crumbly old tires.

I finally managed to find the old brake master from the mustang. It was buried in a box of random bits. Quite a size difference between it and the new(er) booster I plan to replace it with.

I’ve been leaving the rear wheel wells toward the end of the cleanup of the underside of the car. Partly because I figured it would be tricky (which it is) and partly because I was afraid of finding more rust/rot there (which I didn’t!). An hour of wire wheel grinding and it looks a bit better, but lots more to do.
