Postman brought me a boat-load of bus bars for the low voltage wiring in the #EV #Mustang this morning. (I may have gone overboard). There’s three for the engine bay, three for under the dash, and three to go in the boot (permanent 12v, ignition switched 12v, and ground).

They’re much chunkier than I thought. They feel good and solid though.

Oh, and I also started making little brackets to hold the battery modules from the top. Just a piece of flat bar, put in the vice and bend it by hand.

Still trying to decide how to bolt the side panels on. I could just drill a hole and weld a nut to the inside. I’d kind of like to use rivnuts though. But I’d need to countersink them so they were flush.

I think I’m going to use the old fuel tank after all. I changed my mind about putting the batteries in the fuel tank spot. It’ll help to preserve the outside appearance of the car being unchanged.

Here I’ve just dumped 5L of evaporust in there. I’ve been rotating it every day or so to get a different corner. Should make cleaning it up much less labour intensive.

There’s plenty of room for everything - contactors, mid pack disconnect, fuse, HV socket, vent, and LV socket.

I’ll put the sockets on the side I think. Possibly will weld in a little bracket to hold them. The side panels (and top) will be 1mm sheet that will bolt on. They’ll just go around the sockets.

There will be a high voltage junction box sitting on top of the battery box so will leave the top relatively clear.

This morning I did the first test stack up to see if everything fit. There’s always that worry in the back of your head that you’ve not left enough room somewhere and while everything might be able to fit actually getting it in might be impossible.

Over the Christmas break I turned my battery ‘tray’ into a battery box. Well, something that more resembles a box. It has three dimensions now at least. It’s not perfect, but it’s reasonably square.

Pieces of angle iron form the frame of a box. Some edges have been welded while others are just clamped temporarily. A workbench is to the right and the side of a car to the left.

I am thinking about getting an old land rover defender 90 ...

But do I

(If you know anyone in Scotland who could convert it please comment below 👇

Yesterday I setup the BMS and other control systems on this before commissioning.

A customer converted this to electric. Its a Kawasaki Mule quad/sidebyside thingy. The roof is a solar panel so your shade is generating electricity. Its pretty cool!

With its bodywork and tray fitted (And seat!) it'll be ready to do light agricultural work and (almost) never need plugging in.

No fuel, fumes, noise, servicing. Electric is just better! @KiwiEV

The authour & his dog sitting aboard an electric powered "Kawasaki Mule" quad/sidebyside thingy. The roof is a solar panel . There is no bodywork so it looks like a random collection of wheels and pipes. Immediately behind is the authour's work truck (Tesla S) with its boot and bonnet open. Background is suburbia. Concrete drive, wooden fence, houses, blue sky with fluffy clouds.
Dog is not convinced this is a great idea.

Brought the #Mustang to #DublinMaker over the weekend to exhibit it as part of the #OpenInverter stand. Loads of interest in #EVConversion from adults and kids alike. It was a wonderful event. There were five of us on the stand and we were swamped for the whole two days. It was great fun!

The spacers aren't quite tall enough. So I added some washers to add a little height.

End-on view looking at one module stacked on another. The spacers have some washers stacked on top to raise the top module about 10mm higher. You can see clear through the gap between the modules.

I welded nuts to the tray and cut up some threaded rod to the right length.

I got some 30mm threaded spacers to go between the layers of modules.

I made the tray during the week. It's just angle iron (30mm x 2.5mm) made into a rectangle and a bit of sheet welded in to make a floor. Not beautiful, but not terrible.

I roughly measured the distance from the diff to the motor. Anyone know a sliding driveshaft that’s about 1520mm long? Or how to actually search for that? Anywhere I look just has search by make/model. Boosts appreciated.

Greetings from inside the engine bay 👋

I plonked the hood down on the … hood hole (?) temporarily so I could measure how tall the stuff I put in the engine bay can be.

At first I tried to climb in and lift the hood over me, but there was no room for me to scrootch down with the motor, the steel, and the wood in there.

But then I came to my senses and realised I could just lie on my wheely trolley thing without having to risk life and limb.
