Image of LDN 43 - a star forming cloud located in the constellation Ophiuchus. The image is mostly dark, but in the center is a bright white light from a newly formed star. A dark outline that resembles a shadow-puppet moose is lit from the illumination.

i just learned that the closest known black hole to our solar system is ~1,500 LY away & called Gaia BH1.

It is a stellar-mass black hole in a binary system, orbiting a G-type star.

It's located in the #constellation #Ophiuchus.

He's one of the possible identities of the "serpent-bearer" in the (#zodiac #constellation) Ophiuchus (which we covered in Season 1 of our #podcast).

Best known as the #Greek god of medicine & healing, Asclepius didn't start out as an immortal. He was first a v. talented healer who was killed by Big Z (Zeus) after Hades whined that Asclepius was resurrecting ppl (read: keeping them from Hades' domain). But he was brought back to life & turned into a god at the insistence of his father -- Daddy A (Apollo)!

HD 149143, also called Rosalíadecastro, is a #star with a close orbiting #exoplanet in the #Ophiuchus #constellation. Its #apparentVisualMagnitude is 7.89 (a binocular object) and the #absoluteMagnitude is 3.87. The system is located at a distance of 239 #lightYears from the Sun based on #parallax measurements, and it is drifting further away with a #radialVelocity of 12 km/s. On December 17, 2019, as part of the #IAU's #NameExoWorlds project.

Het Alpha Centauri-systeem vertegenwoordigt de dichtstbijzijnde stellaire buur van de Zon, op een afstand van iets meer dan 4 miljard jaar. De ster van Barnard is slechts iets verder weg, op ongeveer 6 lichtjaar. De nabijheid heeft er voor gezorgd dat de ster van Barnard uitgebreid is bestudeerd.

Above the arched top of the dust cave, 3 groupings of stars with diffraction spikes are arranged. A dark cloud sits at the top of the arch of the glowing dust cave, with one streamer curling down the right-hand side. The dark shadow of the cloud appears pinched in the center, with light emerging in a triangle shape above and below the pinch, revealing the presence of a star inside the cloud. The largest jets of red material emanate from within this dark cloud, thick and displaying structure like the rough face of a cliff, glowing brighter at the edges. Fun #astronomy fact I just noticed: the constellation #Ophiuchus, the "snake bearer", is named al-Hawwa (حواء) in Arabic, which is derived from (and the Arabic form of) the Hebrew proper name Heva (חוה), i.e. Eve, who, well, has a certain connection to snakes.

This appears to be a case where a loanword was adopted specifically to take advantage of a metonymic semantic shift.
