Demo scene: L-Packer compresses 40K-/64K demos
Arnaud Carré's "L-Packer" offers high compression rates with comparatively fast decompression. For extremely small file sizes, such as entries for a 4K demo competition, the author recommends the existing tool "Shrinkler"; however, for demos with a size of 40 or 64 KB, his L-Packer is considerably faster and saves the user long waiting times during the start-up process.

Creating #debian system images on #libvirt manually is a bit long, it would certainly be useful to refresh my Packer skills and templates… but I keep thinking "I only need one image, it won't be long" and in fact it's not, until you need to apply a fix, and another, and another.

Currently we're rolling out new VMs using Proxmox templates. Those templates are made once and then they're being kept up to date.

This works well except for the initial step, installing and configuring the initial template.

I'm thinking about proposing to start using Packer. But at every company where I used Packer so far I did this as a kind of passion project as nobody saw the added value. I fear I will be confronted with the same weariness though.

Oh. Wait. Just occurred to me: the disk-entries in /dev are block-special files , not directories. Not being directory files, using relative referents (like ../) wouldn't make a lot of semantic sense, I suppose (since one can't cd to a non-directory file-reference). I also suppose it's not solely a #Linux problem, but I don't currently have access to a #BSD or #SysV derived system to compulsively poke at out of curiosity.

In fairness to myself, I don't think I've ever (intentionally) tried to cd to a file? The only reason I (encountered this) "intentionally" tried to do so, today, is because one of the original authors of the Azure plug-ins for #Packer suggested trying it to work around a limitation in the azure-chroot builder.

Interestingly, while that builder's mount_partition parameter exists solely to take partition-number as an argument, it's a string data-type rather than an integer data-type. Also, it does no input-validation, so passing it something other than digits/initegers doesn't make it vomit …but passing it a ../mapper/- string sure does (though only because of a "not found" error, not because it doesn't know how to handle the string-value).

It's, uh, not a well-written plug-in.

PtvPack is a packer for Noise-/Pro- and Fasttracker modules ("mods"), which is aimed at Vampire-based systems: Up to twelve channels with up to five octaves are supported. The packer is available as a command line tool for Windows and AmigaOS and there is also a playback routine provided as m68k assembler sourcecode.
