I do have a knack for overcomplicating things.

Revisited my #ansible #inventory, removed all lines except the host, and let everything else be handled through my ssh .config.

And it just works. No more issues with weird caching of control connections, no issues with ending up as a different user.

Do you think that is possible to build solid IT career in area sticking just to software, and without knowledge about big vendors?
So basically Hetzner/Scaleway, , and ?
No AD etc, only open standards and implementations?

Does anyone know how to influence the ControlPersist parameter used by #ansible? I have several hosts which are behind a proxy, but since the proxy/port is the same (just the user is different) the ControlPersist causes things to go to the wrong host.

Question for people that use #ansible :

Can/do you handle new applications added to the ansible/root user's $path as part of a playbook, or is it easier to just call them with the full path to the executable?

In March of 2024 I held a three hour presentation on DNS for office staff at the @linuxhotel in Essen which came across quite nicely I think.

I then offered to do similar and explain / demonstrate what configuration management does.

They accepted. Now I have one or more problems and a deadline. 😉

@me folks from know what they are doing in case of or , maybe that is the reason. Most of general-it conferences, are full of AI.

Somebody dragged their feet so I just now got my ticket to #RedHat Summit, and of course all the good #ansible stuff is "waitlist full."

You know what isn't even waitlisted anywhere? That's right, #AI slop. It's almost as if #sysadmin types have been around long enough to know that the buzzword-of-the-day is 99.9% dreck with the remaining portion something for a few people who actually have an interest in whatever the technology backing $BUZZWORD is.

Whilst migrating from my very manual email setup to something orchestrated by ansible and highly-available, I have come upon all sorts if jankiness I don't remember configuring.

Currently, I have multiple working MX servers, but only one postfix submission server. The MX's currently all point to a single dovecot server for LMTP, and it also pulls double-duty as my IMAP server.

Next on my list for ansible configuration:

  • Set up acme.sh so that each MX can handle its own certificates for postfix and dovecot
  • Configure Submission, LMTP and IMAP
  • Configure extra mail services, such as opendkim, opendmarc, spf checking, dovecot indexing

This has been a real learning experience, and with any luck will get me to the point where I'm able to spin up/down new mail handlers just by adding hostnames to an ansible inventory list.

Huh, so Hetzner has an API that allows automatic creation of snapshots... And it also has an Ansible collection...

That sounds a good way to do automated snapshots. Need to do some searching, probably someone already solved it.
