I had a nice moment of literary kismet today; after @benbrown reminded me earlier this week that I've been meaning to re-read 's '80s trilogy for the first time since the books originally came out, today I came across a of 1988's for eleven bucks at in 's (not affiliated with the much more famous store in Seattle). See image alt text for many more details. Now let's find the 1st Ed. of Neuromancer!

First printing of William Gibson's 1988 "Mona Lisa Overdrive," the third of the cyberpunk #Sprawl trilogy that helped first define this genre in the early 1980s. On its own, I'll list it at eBay for $30 just in case I get a taker, would accept up to $15, and with a resale value of only about $10; if I get first printings of the entire trilogy, then you're talking maybe $100 to 150 at eBay; $500 if all are signed too. More importantly for me, though, if I manage to live to 100 (no reason I wouldn't), I can just hold on to this patiently for another 50 years, and the trilogy at that point will be worth major dollars, probably a thousand or more even for unsigned. As a low-budget rare book collector, I mostly specialize in things you can still find at yard sales and used bookstores for $1 to 10 -- namely, Postmodernist novelists of the 1970s, '80s and '90s, especially women and people of color; '90s and '00s culture books on cyberpunk, Generation X, slam poetry, early web design, etc.; and hypermodern stuff people aren't even thinking of collecting yet (like the first printing I own of the "I Can Has Cheezburger?" paperback). If I collect it now when it's in pristine condition, then quietly store it on a shaded bookcase for the next 50 years, all of that stuff will be worth from the hundreds to the thousands per book.

We only stopped for one night in #Portland on our drive from Ashland to Tacoma, but a visit to #Powells was mandatory.

Large brick building with large glass windows and a sign on it saying "Powell's Books: Used and New Books", seen from across the street. There's a diagonal shadow of a pedestrian in the foreground.

Got the Mastodon-recommended #running book, and also supported the #Powells #bookstore union! 📚 ilwulocal5.com/support/

Hopefully this will help me figure out how to best train to accomplish my current short/mid-term goals, which are:

1) Run 3x/week (15K minimum)
2) Get to a point where running a 10K feels like running a 5K (i.e. I won’t procrastinate/be reluctant because it feels formidable/not fun)
3) Stop being out of breath all the time! 🥲

In Portland (Oregon) with Friends

This wanderlust trip was set up just to visit friends. We flew United. We still believe that United domestic and United International are two completely different airlines. We also believe that the "plus points" nonsense is just that...nonsense. Sure would be nice to have a domestic airline that was not a bus.

We landed just after sunset. Mt Hood was visible on landing. Our friends T&G live up on the hill overlooking the city. Portland remains as lush and green and slightly soggy as [...]

#BoringTravel Amtrak 27 arrived Portland about half an hour late. Now relaxing briefly in my hotel before finding some lunch and deciding which bookstores to visit this afternoon. (#Powells is reserved for tomorrow morning.)

The second one is a Belgian Secret Stich. This was such a fun one to make - and it feels so professional, too!

When we visited Portland last summer, the only place we went many times was Powell's City of Books. It is the best bookstore in the world. I grabbed an extra bag because I knew I wanted to make a book out of it.
