Raspberry Pi Imager 1.9.4 Released with Various Changes

A new version of the Raspberry Pi Imager, a free, open source and cross-platform image writing utility (think Etcher, but much redder) is out with an array of modest improvements. Serving as the first release since last September, Raspberry Pi Imager 1.9.4 adds to the big UI changes the previous version brought with some quality-of-life adjustments. For instance, in the OS customisation settings there’s an Enable SSH tab. This now uses “regex to perform some light validation” of public keys to avoid boot failures, having previously just assumed any key entered was correct. Raspberry Pi Imager 9.4 includes an ‘Exclude :sys_more_orange:

Kdenlive is Adding One of Final Cut Pro’s Best Features

Removing backgrounds from video in Kdenlive, the free, open-source video editor for Linux, macOS and Windows, is about to get a whole lot easier. This “modern background removal tool” uses object masks to automatically cut out the subject of a video clip — no green screen required! Real-time background removal features are increasingly common in video conferencing/chat apps like Slack. They allow a user to replace their actual backdrop (like a messy kitchen) with an alternative image or, sometimes, even a video clip. Video editors often have similar needs: they want to ‘cut out’ an object, item, person, or whatever :sys_more_orange:

Calibre 7.2.1 Brings Read Aloud Fixes, New Audio Overlay

Calibre ebook manager, converter, and reader is out with a new update, and it adds an enticing sounding new feature. For a while now Calibre has offered a ‘read aloud’ feature that does exactly what you think it does: a computer voice reads the text of an ePUB book. Calibre 7.2.1 intros a “new tool to create an audio overlay in EPUB files for all text using the Read aloud facility”. This, it says, enables readers to listen with sentence tracking, and assign different voices to different parts of the book’s text. Interestingly, Calibre say using the new tool can :sys_more_orange:

Calibre eBook Manager Intros New PDF Conversion Engine

Open source ebook manager Calibre has a new release out. Calibre 7.2.0 ships with a brand new PDF input engine (used to convert PDF files into other ebook formats, such as EPUB or MOBI). It’s now able to handle “automatic detection of headers and footers based on document analysis”. Fans of the old engine needn’t panic as it’s still included and available to select from the PDF Input section of the Conversion dialog. The Calibre Manual has a detailed guide on converting PDFs to ebook-friendly formats. Calibre’s Read Aloud feature (which does exactly what it says on the tin) picks :sys_more_orange:

Clementine Music Player Gets First Non-Preview Release in 8 Years

Remember Clementine music player? Well, it appears to be back in play – some 8 years since its last stable release. While Clementine feels like it’s slipped out of public consciousness in recent years the player has remained under active development. The last stable release was in 2016 (v1.3.1) but a LOT of release candidate builds were issued since (v1.4.0-rc is carried in the Ubuntu repos). However, this weekend the Clementine GitHub added a non-RC build, v1.4.1, marked as a ‘rolling release’. As the first non-RC build in forever this feels notable. The catch? No official announcement has been so :sys_more_orange:

Qt App Update Roundup: Calligra, Haruna, and Kdenlive

A number of Qt-based apps popular with Linux users, not just those running KDE Plasma, recently received updates. Rather than pumping out a post for each, I figured I’d collate them in a single post and save you some time. Plus, they all kind of link: write a video script in Calligra, edit video in Kdenlive, then watch it back in Haruna. Also, if you’re a fan (or even a developer) of Qt or KDE software, do let me know about any new features or updates using the tip form. I’m often asked why I didn’t cover the new release :sys_more_orange:

Amarok 3.1 Released with Last.FM Tweaks, Qt 6 Prep + More

A new version of Qt-based music player Amarok is available to download. Amarok 3.1 lands three months after Amarok 3.0, which was the first release in nearly 6 years and saw the audio player’s developers complete their port to Qt 5 (which receives further polish here, in 3.1). But with Qt 6 now out work to port Amarok to Qt 6 and KDE Frameworks 6 has been picking up steam. Thought that effort isn’t complete here, in Amarok 3.1, the team say it’s “not that far away” – so that’s great to hear. Amarok 3.1 overhauls its Last.fm integration plugin :sys_more_orange:

Open-Source Video Editor Gets ‘Game-Changer’ Update

A new version of open-source video editor OpenShot is available to download. OpenShot 3.2 is the first update to the app since early last year, and the editor’s chief developer, Jonathan Thomas, describes this release as a “game-changer with new themes, improved features, and enhanced performance”.   Among the change and new features in OpenShot 3.2: A slew of more generalised improvements, ranging from a ‘stable’ undo/redo experience, and UI tweaks to support high-dpi displays, through to a more reliable tracker/object detection effect (a really compelling features) are present. Naturally, lots and lots of bug fixes are included too for all supported :sys_more_orange:

KDE Plasma 6.0 Has Arrived, This is What’s New

KDE Plasma 6 has arrived. The first stable release in an all-new series of the phenomenally popular Linux desktop environment is available to download. KDE Plasma 6 improves security, performance, usability, and hardware support Naturally, a major milestone such as this includes scores of changes, enhancements, and new features, the best of which I look at in this post. But I want to touch on the “intangible” changes too as KDE Plasma 6.0 upgrades its underlying application framework, Qt, to a major new version, and fully embraces the Wayland display server. “These under-the-hood upgrades benefit Plasma’s security, efficiency, and performance, :sys_more_orange:

Musique Music Player Ported to Qt 6, Refreshes UI

It’s been a long time since I last wrote about Musique, a desktop music player for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Amazingly, the app is still going as it just got its first major update in nearly 3 years. “This Musique update is the first Qt 6-based release I do. The main effort has been modernizing the look of the app: a more flat and clean style, with rounded artist pics and a nicer toolbar,” writes its developer, Flavio Tordini, on the project website. Musique is a music player in the traditional mould: you point it at a folder full of :sys_more_orange:

‘Haruna’ is a Slick Qt-Based Video Player with YouTube Support

Are you a KDE Plasma user looking for a flashy yet featured video player? If so, check out Haruna. I tried it this week and was really impressed by its design, its feature-set, and its ease of use. I’ve written a fair bit about fancy GTK media players like Clapper and Celluloid in the past. But Qt apps? Those not so much. And yet Haruna, an open source video player built using Qt/QML and libmpv, is every inch a match for those (and other) players. And naturally it looks fab on the KDE Plasma desktop: Obviously I’m aware that caring :sys_more_orange:

OpenShot 3.0 contains over 1,000 improvements and fixes, includes better stability and memory usage, and debuts interesting new performance and export capabilities. This is the first update to the non-linear vide editor since last year. Jonathan Thomas, the creator of OpenShot, details the changes in a blog post, explain that he and the OpenShot team “worked tirelessly over the past 12 months to identify and fix as many stability issues as possible”. Ghostwriter is a Deathly Good Distraction Free Writing App

If you’re looking for a smart, distraction free text editor for Windows, macOS, or Linux, check in with Ghostwriter. Ghostwriter is now part of the KDE app family proper, and for good reason: it’s a supremely competent, straightforward word processor with markdown support, including a toggle-able rich preview so that you can see your formatting in-situ, as you type. This app also auto-saves work as you type (so you can work with some ease of mind) and it has several advanced ‘distraction free’ features that help you tune out on what you’re doing. EverSticky: Sticky Notes App for Linux that Syncs to Evernote

When it comes to sticky note apps for Linux it’s fair to say we’re spoilt for choice – heck knows I’ve tried most of the ones out there! EverSticky is another open-source sticky notes app for Linux but it has a major difference: it syncs to Evernote, the hugely-popular note taking and task management service. Existing Evernote users will find this a compelling USP as, with minimal effort, it’s easy to take notes and keep them in sync across multiple devices. EverSticky is a Qt-based app created by developer Joey Miller. But it’s fully compatible with most modern Linux desktops :sys_more_orange:

Open Source Video Editor Kdenlive Gains 10-Bit Color Support

If you’re feeling creative this week be sure to check out the latest release of open source video editor Kdenlive. Kdenlive’s development team has announced the release of Kdenlive 22.04. This is a major update that carries more than 300 commits. While its devs say this release is ‘mostly focused on stability and polishing’ there are a couple of new features you’ll want to know about. The biggest ‘new’ feature in Kdenlive 22.04 is support for full range 10-bit colour. This is a pretty huge advancement that will definitely help the non-linear editor find favour with indie filmmakers. The drawback :sys_more_orange:
