@WeirdWriter I've never even heard of this #Jami. It's 20 years old... Is this popular? What on earth?

WA ⇨ Signal ⇨ Jabber ⇨ DeltaChat ⇨ Session ⇨ Jami ⇨ Chat over #I2P ⇨ Chat over Freenet

I just did a quick evaluation of @Jami Jami messenger.
I installed the stable Ubuntu packages on 2 Linux boxes, one ipv6 only, one dual stack.
Plus MS-windows 10 on a VM on an ipv4 only network
Plus android client via f-droid on a LineageOS phone.
The f-droid android client keeps telling me I need some push library installed, without an easy solution at hand, but seems to mostly work otherwise.
initial impressions and GUI, OK with 2 clients and a group chat, but a some of the clients could not communicate... but give no indication that they cannot communicate, like talking into the void.
The ipv6 and ipv4 only boxes not being able to talk is understandable, but other clients not working is a bit annoying, I'll wait for this project to mature a bit more, like SimplexChat etc...
Has anyone used Jami messenger?
I'm looking for a completely open source IM/chat that's multi platform, not too hard to use, self hostable, has end-to-end encryption, and doesn't depend on a mobile phone number for the account to exist.. plus same account being usable across multiple devices would be cool.
How does it handle group chats?
Rocketchat used to tick the a lot of the boxes but has been suffering from creeping proprietary dependencies. I wouldn't say enshittification exactly but it's become less usable for my use case as the later versions pander more to a corporate chat target market.
edit: also, it being 2025, working fine on ipv6 would be nice

#Jami (https://jami.net/) wäre auch eine Alternative. Lässt sich anonym nutzen und ist P2P.

At work, I currently face the challenge of finding a Linux softphone I can use with a 3CX PBX.
With sipgate we used Linphone, which worked better than sipgate's Softphone or CLINQ apps. But with 3CX the best I could achieve is registering the softphone. With Linphone I can initiate calls but as soon as I pick up the connection gets terminated by the remote side again (at least that's what Linphone says).
I tried Blink, which at least doesn't terminate immediately. But I don't get any sound, on neither end. I can hear recordings originating from the PBX, though. The codec negotiation works, too, as I went through each codec individually.
With Jami and GNOME Calls I can't even register the softphone with the PBX.
From China with Love!
Signal doesn't work, Telegram doesn't work, Matrix ain't connect just like Reddit or Briar. No Google or Duckduckgo, Ecosia or Qwant.
But #Jami still let's me still talk to my loved ones.
And this.. gets through?

@jancordeiro Thanks for the tip! Do you have experience with #Jami (formerly #GNURing, #SFLphone)? I just checked out the website and @Jami looks very impressive in its features and abilities, making me think about trying it out.
I would like to know how involved I need to be to—how does it compare to Linphone?
