BBC Archive: "1980: Making TELEVISION MAGIC"

The ZX Spectrum was launched 1983 as #Timex Sinclair 2068 computer on the US market. With a #Z80A CPU running on 3.5 MHz this beautiful #homecomputer was capable to draw electric images on a regular telly. With a resolution of 256×192 #pixels even limited to 15 colours it was great for the budget.

Print'n'Plotter sold their #graphics software under the same product name #Paintbox like #Quantel, but for #Sinclair #homecomputers. While #colourClash was a serious limitation in the 80s, it's a #8bit #cgi #glitch effect today available in smartphone camera apps.

#Quantel came up 1981 with the #Paintbox DPB-7001. It was the first 68K CPU based #digital-painting, #imagegediting solution that challenged big players like #Scitex #Crossfield #Hell. Next time #Xerox #SuperPaint became important it was in legal defense for #AdobePhotoshop.

Spent most of today testing and cataloguing these #Quantel CPU cards. These were used in the Quantel Paintbox, HAL, Editbox and Henry from the 1990s. They each have a 68040 @ 33mhz, 64mb RAM, DMA, Inmos Transputer link and much more. The open machine here is a Quantel Paintbox Express i was using as a test platform.

Tonight's been fun. Nerdsniped by a friend: "Hey I'm having trouble figuring out these #quantel PAL dumps, can you take a look?"
So I did. And I asked DextersTechLab, the fountain of all Quantel knowledge.

"There are two versions of the Size card. The schematic is for one version. The PAL dumps are for the other."

... Internal screaming? No sir, I'll just scream into the void like a barn owl!

This work is a remake of an image Hamilton originally created in 1956 as part of his contribution to the influential group exhibition This is Tomorrow at Whitechapel Art Gallery. The original work is was one of Hamilton’s most famous images and has become an icon of British Pop art. As part of a 1992 BBC television programme he demonstrated how an artist can use a computer to generate art by recreating the 1956 collage in a way that reflected the 1990s, such as the circuit board wallpaper and caricature of Margaret Thatcher.

I got a chance to use the Quantel Paintbox at #VCFEast. This was a Wacom and Photoshop precursor that is ridiculously powerful. I learned it was used for a lot of famous artwork and videos in the 80s and 90s. I made a drawing of Topaz, and the printout is a video capture of the image printed to a photo printer. #quantel #paintbox

This lovely looking PCI card is an Intergraph SMT491 Raven DS. Part of the Intergraph StudioZ and provides SDI video, uncompressed digital video at 270mbps. From around 1998/1999. Also used in the 5D Masher, a PC add-on for #Quantel machines to render video clips with effects.
