The Oncoming Storm

I love painting Kyu and the ocean. They are very closely linked in my current story WIP, so it feels natural.

Kyu is an amnesiac, who washed ashore close to a port city. In order to find her place in the world and her roots, she travels a lot. But there is always a part of her that is especially drawn to the ocean, as she knows the mystery of her identity lies beyond it.

In this particular piece, there's also a storm approaching from the ocean. I wanted a bit more tension and foreboding in this painting.

For the longest time, I couldn't quite fathom how to draw chibis. Whenever I did, they looked *really* odd.

But then I found the holy grail of chibi drawing: BEANS. BEANS ARE HERE TO DELIVER US!

So, the torsos are beans. That left some stylistics choices to make regarding limbs - thin or thicc, short or long - and the heads/faces. For the eyes I dug deep in my treasure chest of art styles and pulled out some Arina Tanemura, gosh, I love how she draws eyes!

I'll need to draw a couple dozen more chibis to really solidify my process, but the Recentia cast were willing guinea pigs for the first round! (They'll inevitably end up in the coming rounds, too... so yeah).

"One who had the responsibility and power shoved on her, the other who trained her whole life to wield it." --- As I'm finally making larger strides on the writing side and get to know these characters better myself, I'm also getting around to making character protraits. --- Kyu I've known for years, though I always have to sort out which version of her I'm currently engaging with, if that makes sense. She's been the MC of the story forever, but the story changed a lot over the years. --- Ayira is a newer addition, first conceived only a couple of years ago. Her origin changed around a bit as well, but none of the major shifts that Kyu experienced. I've not written much of her yet, as she doesn't join the crew until Chapter 4 (my chapters are roughly 15k words.... so it's a while), but I'm looking forward to it! "Kyu" was the only name she knew to be hers. However, it didn't ring quite true to her yet. She'd only carried it for a month and important things like names needed a while to stick. ~~ Treating you to the opening lines as they are now - may get changed with editing later on, but I figured they might make a nice hook :P -

I haven't talked much about Kyu's story online so far. And I'll be keeping it that way for a while longer. However, I'm not above posting some pictures once in a while.
Not just the epic ones, but also some smaller moments.

Especially the smaller moments are something I want to do more of. We'll see if I actually do.
