#RecognitionRewards

The Dutch Network for #ResearchIntegrity is hosting a keynote and panel discussion on reforms in #recognitionrewards in #Maastricht on 9 April 2025 and registrations are still open! This topic ties in with current debates about budget cuts and changing priorities in #HigherEducation more generally, so we hope that many more people sign up! Everyone is welcome --- including visitors from outside academia and outside UM.

@ORCID_Org in reply to ORCID: good news and that is in line with commitments of the international Coalition for Reforming Research Assessment @CoARAssessment and the Dutch Recognition & Rewards program.

"Recognition and rewards should be embedded into the PhD assessment at the same rate as it is incorporated into other academic career paths,.."

Datasets and software repositories for thesis chapters! Outreach and citizen science projects counted as part of the thesis! Translation, mentoring and teaching fully included in the dissertation evaluation!

What is holding us back?

Today, I'm spending the morning at the Dutch #ResearchDataAlliance meeting, held at the university library of @utrechtuniversity. 📚

I enjoyed the keynote by Paul Boselie @boselie who highlights the importance of leadership, team spirit, and taking personal responsibility in order to move towards Open Science.

Utrecht University will no longer promote people to the highest professor position unless they have proven leadership expertise!

A lecture slide showing the blocks of text about three levels of responsibility: You, You and your team, and You and the organisation. Next to each block, there is an image of a stylised, red bird: A singular one, a red bird in a group of three other white birds, and a red one in a group of nine white birds.

I'm proud to share the output that I contributed to during the #OSR24NL last week!

Recognising Open Science practices in higher education staff assessment doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1090411

This is a guidance document to encourage and take into account Open Science practices during assessment interviews.

It was a pleasure to work on this with Florian, Tanya, Zafer and @nsunami!

Onwards to the next #OpenScience retreat: can't wait!

Very interesting long read on “value capture” — when measurements like grades, citation counts, or step counts take over the true values (learning, writing, health) you actually care about. Also related to “stop the numbers game” by David Parnas (“Counting papers slows the rate of scientific progress”).

There is a lot of interest to better understand the role of professional support staff in research, but also a pressing need to recognise and reward their work. Read about the ‘quick & dirty’ survey held during the last #RecognitionRewards festival👉 recognitionrewards.nl/portfoli

More ammunition for SF-DORA and #RecognitionRewards: "the number of papers cited at least as well as those appearing in high-impact factor journals vastly exceeds the number of papers published in such venues" biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20
(via @firn)

BTW this puts precise numbers to my mock-up in a blog post on why article level metrics are better if you want to value merit and talent over privilege and luck ideophone.org/why-article-leve

Figure showing citation distributions for a so-called high impact journal like Nature and an open access mega journal that does not try to filter based on perceived urgency. There are, in any given year, hundreds of Nature papers that underperform quite a bit relative to the IF, and the sheer publication volume of the alternatives means that there will be many more papers that *outperform* the average Nature paper in terms of citations. This —the skewed distributions for both the megajournal and the glamour journal— shows why it is a bad idea to ascribe properties to individual papers based on how other papers published under the same flag have been cited.

Are courses with "Community Engaged Learning-like components" a good place to start, or do they water down educational outcomes too much? How to ensure that CEL efforts by educators are recognized and rewarded, and educators using CEL supported?

So many questions, such a bouquet of answers. How does your institute do this?

Within the @BerlinUAlliance #BUA #OpenScience dashboards project we organised a workshop on "Recognizing the diversity of Open Science Practices across different research communities" at the Recognition and Rewards Festival in Utrecht in April 2023 #recognitionrewards. 📝 Our colleague Maaike wrote a short report on the Festival and the Workshop. Really great panel on ethics chaired by Fabian Medvecky at #pcst2023. The principle 'generosity' from the book An Ethics of Science Communication can extend to stopping unpaid work in the sector for everyone involved - valuation preceeds professionalization! #RecognitionRewards

A nicer phrase for non-scientists is 'Team Infrastructure Roles'!

Noémie Aubert Bonn, who is an excellent speaker, makes some clear forward steps for #recognitionrewards

1. Acknowledge that research assessment evolution is uneven. It needs global coordination to move forward

2. Review the role of APC open access and the inequalities it produces, and the related metrics

3. Give researchers the time to undertake meaningful assessment, at all stages of career progress (ie from PhD onwards).

Everyone in the congregation at the #recognitionrewards event seems to believe that change is needed.

So why is it so difficult?

It is just processed and behaviours that we need to acknowledge and change?

Or are there other trends working against reform?
