I find fragments are more tantalizing and evocative than an entire work. Many #ruins look better bleached and broken than they did when new and whole. To me. I think this is why #reconstructions and #restorations are so often unsatisfactory even if absolutely accurate. Restoration robs the ruin of its power to conjure the ages it has withstood, to ensorcell our imaginations as we walk among the the scarred reliefs and tumbled stones. Rock of ages, cleft for me. #talkingtomyselflettingyoulisten

ICYMI: Dirt is relative. I am not talking about how clean your flat is, but what is defined as dirty or out-of-placeness. Bringing the philosophical theory by Mary Douglas to the world of 3D #Reconstructions, we can think about the reconstructed dirt as well...

Welcome Leah and hello everyone!
I study past #climate aka #paleoclimate using #molecular #fossils aka #biomarkers.
Yes, #OrganicGeochemistry also provides tools for #climate #reconstructions.

Here's my #introduction to all you ... Tooters. I'm a refugee from the Tech world, who took early retirement, which enabled me to return to my first love: #archaeology. Specifically, Roman history and archaeology (love the Greeks, Egyptians and Assyrians, too!).

I started getting tired of asking why there weren't any good #reconstructions of ancient polychrome sculpture, so I decided to create them myself. A continuing process, always learning. #polychromy

Polychrome (painted) reconstruction of a funerary relief of an ancient Roman man who ran a pillow shop. The scene is set in a portico - open air colonnade with a roof, Corinthian capitals on either side. He stands on the left side and watches his assistants open a box with a bolt of cloth inside. This is being watched by a seated couple - the man is in a toga and the woman has wrapped her palla (cloak) around her legs. A man and a woman stand behind them, probably slaves. Patterned pillows and bolts of cloth hang from a wooden dowel. A terracotta tile roof is perfectly rendered above the scene. This relief is in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.Polychrome reconstruction of the Diana of Versailles, now in the Louvre Museum in Paris. I've colored her short, knee-length peplos/tunic in pale yellow, and her chiton (cloak) is colored Egyptian Blue and wrapped around her waist and left shoulder. She reaches behind he right shoulder to grab a golden arrow from her quiver. I've added her missing bow to her left hand and gilded it. A leaping deer (a 16th c. reconstruction) is at her left. Her sandals are brown with gilded palmettes, and she wears a gilded diadem. I've also added a slight crescent-shaped halo, indicating her godhood (as the goddess of the moon). The scene behind her is a dark forest, and the statue is on a marble plinth.Fully reconstructed scene from a villa, showing the statue of Agrippina the Younger on a short plinth, in a large niche. The walls are covered in frescoes and the scene is lit with a double-flame bronze lamp on a candelabra. The head of Agrippina is from the collection at the Landesmuseum Württemberg in Stuttgart, Germany (@ninawillburger@social.anoxinon.de commissioned me to do this reconstruction). The torso is from Dresden. Agrippina is rendered with brunette hair, brown eyes and pulls a chiton-palla around her body. The chiton is a deep purple with gold embroidered stars and a palmette and hippocampi border. Her tunic is in yellow with a reverse wave and blue stripe border. This reconstruction of the statue of Mithras in the British Museum is known as a tauroctony - Mithras killing the bull. I used the fresco of Mithras from the Mithraeum in Capua for the color and pattern guide on his clothing. His tunic, Phrygian cap and leggings are in red; the border of his tunic is a gold wave pattern on a blue background with golden spikes above. The same pattern is on his sleeves. His leggings have gold symbols (sun, stars) on a blue stripe running down his leg. The same pattern runs down a stripe on his cap. His cape is blue with gold edging and gold stars. He's stabbing a white bull, and the red blood is running down the hide; a yellow dog and a red snake lick at the blood. A yellow scorpion grabs at the bull's testicles. All fertility imagery.
