Just had a flashback to "better days" when my grandma would make tea, either at her place or to take with her to the little parcel of land she rented ("Schrebergarten"). Always black tea, always with milk and sugar, and usually also with a dash of rum. Yes rum, that infamous alcoholic pirate beverage. As a kid, that tea was my favorite! 🧐 🤔 🤯

If I recall correctly my dad would go "Is this tea with rum again? You know he can't have any with rum!" and my grandma would go "Pffft, it's just a little rum, he's not gonna die from it. He's always so pale, this way he gets a little color and besides ... I think he likes the taste." ☺️ But I would never get more than one small cup from her either.

Nowadays I still like black tea, still with milk, but with sweetener instead of sugar and no rum whatsoever. Maybe I should try it with a dash of bourbon? 😮 Oh well... 🤣

This one was one of those “use what’s laying around” cocktails. Plus, I wanted to try my new clear ice spear out. Gonna have to keep this template in mind for the summer, it was delish!

Výsledek včerejšího rumového workshopu v Barstars.cz (chuťově zjistím až zítra, potřebuje to 2 dny na "spojení") 🥃 🤩

Nejdřív proběhl výklad o rumech (historie, výroba, kategorie/styly...), pak degustace čtyř rumů tří stylů a následně "laboratorní" práce s tvorbou blendu. Kdo chtěl, mohl ochutnat i další rumy, už za extra peníze - využil jsem a okusil rumy Frederic Kafka (Old Bohemian Blend) a Presidente José Martí (SS 15). Poslední jmenovaný byl nejzajímavější a nejvíc mi chutnal 😋

Blend rumů - Botucal, Arehucas, Don W a Old Monk

WORMHOLE

- ½ oz lime juice
- ½ oz lemon juice
- 1 oz orange juice
- ½ oz coconut cream
- ½ oz salted caramel sweet cream
- ½ oz Nixta Licor de Elote
- 1 oz mezcal
- ¾ oz Stroh 80

Shake // Open pour // Garnish: dehydrated orange

This has been on my reshake list forever and I finally got around to it! In December 2024 I went to Mothership, a space-themed tiki bar in San Diego with Star Trek TOS vibes that I just loved. At the bar it came in a Nachtmann crystal glass and specifically named Stroh, an Austrian rum. Both are really easy to get in my area, so I vowed to remake it.

The spec proportions are my best guess, but I think I landed pretty close and it tasted great. I went a step further with the Stroh and used a barspoon to cover the dehydrated orange for a flaming boost to warp speed! The original had a candied orange instead of dehydrated (see second pic to compare).

#ThinSectionThursday Some new photographs taken today from a rock collected during my PhD work on the island of Rum, a lonnggg time ago!

The rock is a lovely fresh gabbro from Unit 3 of the Rum Layered Intrusion. Pic shows small rectangular-ish crystals of plagioclase, a large irregular xl of olivine (centre) all embedded in a single large oikocryst of clinpyroxene. Field of view about 3.5mm wide.

In the centre of the field of view is a large irregular orange-brown crystal of olivine, surrounded by a swarm of rectangular white-grey-and-black striped crystals of plagioclase. These crystals show a preferential E-W alignment. The space between all these crystals is occupied by pale buff-coloured material, which is a single crystal of clinopyroxene, which grew later than the other minerals, and engulfed the older crystals.
