If there's a problem with your returned ballot, the SF Department of Elections will try to contact you. You must work with them to fix the problem or your vote will not be counted.

As of November 3, 2025. 164,002 vote-by-mail ballots have been returned and accepted by the San Francisco Department of Elections. 44 more ballots are in review. 284 additional were returned without a signature. 447 have a signature that doesn't seem to match the voter's record. 2 are from military or overseas voters who haven't sent their oath of voter form. 3 were returned by fax, but the voter was not eligible to vote that way. 83 have a voter registration that is canceled or ineligible. 67 envelopes didn't have a ballot inside. Dates for San Franciscans to know for the California special election. Early October: Ballots begin arriving - If you’re registered to vote, your ballot will be mailed to you. October 6: Early voting starts - Return your ballot in an official drop box, by mail, or at the City Hall Voting Center. October 20: Deadline to register to vote online or by mail - After this, you can still register and vote, but only in person. November 4: Election Day! - Put your ballot in a drop box or bring it to any polling place in the city by 8pm.
