OPINON POLL: "About half think that is generally going in the wrong direction and 71 percent say California will have bad times financially during the next 12 months." - Public Policy Institute of California

California's #Prop50 doesn't have the same legal frailty as the blocked Texas map - their voters were asked to vote for it to oppose Trump's power grab, which is 100% political, not racial. Pod: https://bit.ly/3Z0lr7xprospect.org/2025/11...

So it's ok when Texas does this bullshit, but California? Oh no! This crappy administration throws a hissy fit.

📝In a letter to the editor, reader Peter McNamee writes that eight conservative California counties that backed Trump in 2024 voted yes on Prop. 50 this year — a sign, he says, of fading support for MAGA politics.

The cartoon shows a bloated Donald Trump, in suit and floor-length red tie, standing at a leaking dike, with his finger in one hole, stopping the water, while nearby are several furious leaks, labelled "SHERRILL", "SPANBERGER", "PROP 50" and "MAMDAMI".

@georgetakei

Both maps in the article are misleading, because it's one person, one vote, not "one acre, one vote".

All that bright red area in the 2024 presidential results, and the orange "no" areas in California, are mostly sparsely populated counties. The maps exaggerate the importance of large land areas with few voters. Cows don't vote!

The presidential map is doubly misleading: the bright red and blue colors hide what proportion of a county's voters voted Republican or Democratic. 51%-49% and 99%-1% look the same.

Trump's nationwide margin was one of the smallest in history, not at all a landslide!

Better: maps where area is made proportional to the number of people.

Maps like these, from engaging-data.com and apnews.com. (For the presidential vote, county populations are an imperfect approximation of actual votes, but that's what I found in a quick web search.)

2024 Presidential Election Results by County, a map from engaging-data.com. Circles of different shades of blue and red represent Democratic and Republican vote margins in each county; the areas are proportional to counties' population.
The West Coast and Northeast are heavily blue, with a mixture in the Midwest and Southeast, more pale red (smaller margins) in the Southwest, and tiny red dots in the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains states.A map of "ballots counted" in California counties, with colored circles' areas representing numbers of ballots, and different shades of blue (for "yes" majority) or orange (for "no" majority) indicating vote share. There are large blue circles around Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, and the southernmost counties. Orange circles are much smaller.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I thought for sure Trump was going to claim the #NYC election was rigged, not that he'd claim #prop50 in #California was rigged. Guess we know now which one worries him the most.
