My lessons learned were:
- Pay attention to the same weather and check forecast before heading out
- Bring enough water for a 16 mile trail (which turned into 20+). I needed at least four liters, I brought two
- Have redundant medication, map, compass, and gps (if you have one)
- Don't trust others' stated expertise or knowledge of a trail that you have not walked before
- Do not be overconfident in your abilities
No current imagery of the area that person is in. $759 for new imagery, but the time will be 2-3 days (or longer) to acquire, which is not great when you've been missing for 3 days. That said, there is water at the bottom of the canyon, you won't starve to death as long as you stay hydrated and don't hurt yourself. You might locate someone if they are smart enough to be out in the open with reflective/bright colors. (ps. tip: BRING AN EMERGENCY BLANKET WITH YOU HIKING ALL THE TIME... Here's one of the typical places people go wrong... Instead of turning left on the trails back towards the road, they end up going past the trail and down into the canyon on the right. The guy I located from his selfie, and I have at least two others (maybe 3?) marked... one was an Eagle Scout and went all the way left and survived, the other was a fatality. There are probably others. The hard part for crews (and hikers) is it is a big area, not easy to be seen in the trees, can't hear people. #Waterman #SearchAndRescue #SAR #hiking
Likely this lost hiker is in the bottom of one of these canyons. Though potentially stuck on a cliff, it's easy to start heading downhill here and get mired in rough country with no way up an no way down. #waterman #SearchAndRescue #SAR #hiking

Had a helicopter fly directly overhead. Based on what I was able to dig up for comparison, I'm almost certain it was a UH-60, which, if true, doesn't narrow it down much in terms of what it was doing. Apparently, they're used by LE, military, and civilians, for a wide range of things including but not limited to SAR, moving cargo, and fire suppression. This one didn't look like it was carrying anything on hard points, at least from what I could see, so I'm assuming it was unarmed. So it could've been there for basically any reason imaginable, in other words. Interesting.

It never ceases to amaze me the number of people who get into trouble while hiking. And it's always a case of “didn't check the weather”, “didn't have layers/food/water/a PLB”, “overestimated their capabilities”.
It's not as if there isn't a reasonably well established set of considerations and gear people should use when going hiking. It's not like doing a quick circuit of Centennial Park…

That is great news for the many thousands who lost their loved ones in a sinking rubberboat on their way to Sicily. I'm sure they would like to bury their dead and know what happened just as well as the families of millionaires.
But this won't happen. Because people who shipwreck in rubberboats are usually black and are usually poor.

multiple hikers were caught in a big rockfall near Bow Glacier Falls in Alberta. sadly one person was found deceased; two were taken by air ambulance and one by road ambulance to hospital. #SAR personnel with dogs and drones will resume the search for victims this morning.
