Are We Ready for Death in Space?

NASA has quietly taken steps to prepare for a death in space. We need to ask how nations will deal with this inevitability now, as more people start traveling off the planet

We’re Not Going to Mars Anytime Soon—Despite What Musk Says

.. Musk and ..Trump have announced ambitious plans to send a mission to Mars in 2026 and 2028. It’s not going to happen

"..up to trillions of $. .. real aim—to funnel enormous sums of money away from researchers at NASA + its partners + into his privately-held company w/o having to answer to shareholders or deliver on promised schedules."

Scientific American Loses Its Bold Leader

"Trump spews insults and wins the election. Helmuth loses her job. Critics of cancel culture cheered Helmuth’s cancellation."

Excellent analysis on politics, journalism, and science in the wake of SciAm editor Laura Helmuth stepping down.

I read that an author in the Scientific American had written a book called “A little man who wasn‘t there” - that I’m sure is a reference to a poem I learned (and loved) in my teens:

I saw a little man upon the stair
A little man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
Gee, I wish he’d go away

Three different views of debris from a SpaceX Crew Dragon vehicle. This section of the Crew Dragon’s trunk fell on Barry Sawchuk’s farmland in Saskatchewan on February 26, 2024, and is but one of several large pieces discovered from the uncontrolled reentry event. I've just realised that I read my first edition of Scientific American in May 1984, just over 40 years ago. A couple of months later, I set up a regular subscription (a standing order in WH Smiths, back then). I'm still reading it, and I still have almost all of the intervening issues.
