Having spent my entire life believing my ancestors were , modern technology has allowed me to look centuries into my ancient past and reveal long-hidden truths from the mists of time. Spoiler alert: I'm Scots-Irish ;-) 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇮🇪 🍻 👍 😁

Making flax is part of Nutfield history. The Scots Irish settlers brought flax seeds and the knowledge of making linen with them from Northern Ireland and Scotland. nhpr.org/2024-01-01/exploring- #history #NewHampshire #NutfieldNH #ScotsIrish #familyhistory

What was Christmas like in 1700s New England, particularly in the Scots Irish settlements of New Hampshire (like Nutfield!)? nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com #Christmas #history #NewEngland #NewHampshire #ScotsIrish

Ocean Born Mary was born on board a ship full of Scots Irish immigrants in 1720, on her way to Nutfield (Londonderry, New Hampshire). Do you know her story? #history #genealogy #FamilyHistory #ScotsIrish #NewHampshire #LondonderryNH #NutfieldNH nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com

@HisAndHearsePress
The #Scots came over primarily because of the #HighlandClearances, when they were thrown off their ancestral lands by #British Lords who wanted to convert the land to sheep farming. Part of this oppression also meant that their #Scottish ways were literally being outlawed (wearing the #kilt, playing the pipes, and speaking #Gaelic were all declared criminal offenses).

Some Scots migrated to #Ireland off and on, and some of those came to the USA during the #GreatPotatoFamine. They are often referred to as "the #ScotsIrish" (or incorrectly as "the #ScottishIrish").

Are there any people here who consider themselves #Rednecks, who are also #liberal, or even #left of liberal (like me)? I'm not a redneck exactly, but those influences are in my blood and in my culture and it kind of puts me in a weird spot. Can anyone identify? I'd love to have a convo with #TraeCrowder about this stuff, but I imagine he's busy being a full time comic and podcast host.

I'm currently #reading An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States and it seems pretty much everything that is going on in the #US can be explained by what's in that #book

I'm learning about its #Calvinist heritage, the #ScotsIrish, how #colonialism relates to #WitchTrials, how #WhiteSupremacy has roots in #Christian theology.

And, of course, all of this is part of #British #History.

It's an insightful book.

Tonight is Burns Night - January 25th is the birthday of Scots poet Robert Burns. In New Hampshire we celebrate Burns night with poems by Burns and also with poems by our own Scots Irish poet "The Rustic Bard" Robert Dinsmore of Windham, New Hampshire. nutfieldgenealogy.blogspot.com #BurnsNight #Burns #History #NewHampshire #NewEngland #Poetry #Poems #ScotsIrish #Nutfield

Repeat an idea often enough within a cultural space, and people will eventually assume it must be true.

In Southern Appalachia, the pre-eminence ascribed to "Scots-Irish" cultural influence - especially as regards music - has been repeated so often that people have come to take it "as Gospel".

This “Scots-Irish equals Appalachia” nexus is not supported by actual evidence upon close examination...
