#marginalia #search #splash screen shows some cryptic messages every time I open it. There is even an accordion "Why am I seeing it?", but I never managed to open it - too fast transition to actual search page.

Anyone explain it to me, please?

I've been trying Qwant, Ecosia, and StartPage to replace DuckDuckGo. What I'm missing:

* Unit/money conversions: "15 miles in km" (StartPage has this but for money)
* Bang to switch to another search engine like "!g". It's quicker on mobile to prepend "!g" than to copy the search query to the address bar and swap the search engine
* "define term" search

I don't want to use Kagi. Any thoughts?

Maybe I should get some unit conversion extension...

"Starting today, if you’ve turned on sharing to the #fediverse on #Threads, you’ll be able to see posts from the #federated users you follow in a dedicated feed, making it easier to find posts shared from other apps or servers. You can also now #search for fediverse users directly in Threads, helping you more easily connect with people who post outside Threads. Right now, servers connected to the fediverse include Mastodon, Bookwyrm, WriteFreely about.fb.com/news/2025/06/its- #meta #socialmedia

Currently watching #HaltAndCatchFire for the third time - I love this series so much and knew few people who have even heard of it.

I'm at the point in season 4 where Comet is building a Yahoo-like web #directory and Rover is developing a Google-like search algorithm. I remember that time well and how revelatory Google #search was back then.

In the context of HACF, it's clear that Comet can't scale to the expected size of the Internet.

It's sad now to be at the stage where it's clear that Google can't (or rather has chosen not to) scale with the predictable volumes of grifters and bad-faith actors now flooding the web.

We're at the stage where a Comet-like directory is starting to feel like the only viable solution, with some real human curation by people with understanding of what is significant to different audiences for each topic.

Or... switch to Kagi, where disabling this feature is as simple as flipping an "off" toggle in the settings. It remains inactive unless you choose to enable it, and you also have the option to filter out AI-generated images from your search results:

Corey Doctorow on the enshittification of Google and the awesomeness of Kagi. Just brilliant summation.

Google is wholeheartedly embracing AI technology and its new tool could rejuvenate the internet or bring about the apocalypse for websites.

TikTok search sucks, Google finds the most popular TikTok memes much faster because someone mentioned and linked them outside TikTok, but... Google search is becoming worse literally every day 😩

@bluetea I use the #hashtag as a primitive form of #search. Been using it on twitter since 2007, I joined flickr in 05 & distinctly remember it being on flickr first. It predates most of the social media sites ppl use now

If Kagi has improved your online experience, share the difference - gift a Kagi subscription to someone you care about:

kagi.com/settings?p=gift

Two cartoon animals, Kagi's illustrated mascot dog on the left and a capybara (nicknamed Kagibara) wearing a green tie on the right, stand on either side of a wrapped gift box with a tag labeled "Better Search." The Kagi logo is displayed at the very top.

I liked Qwant well enough for search. I didn't care for DuckDuckGo. The responses it gave felt "off" like they were running at a tangent to what I was asking.

I starting using Ecosia today, and the image search isn't just the same 20 images in random order. It's like it's aggregating things WELL. It looks nice and most importantly, the results look like real results.

Sounds like Ecosia and Qwant are also collaborating on something.
