#Snac

@menel

again, I perfectly know how some ISPs are managing their access networks, either with NAT64 or tunneling. In this case, you need some reverse tunnel, the most known free one is the cloudflare's one. Still, is not a #snac fault.

I confirm that #snac works OK in whatever TCP/IP network configuration (IPv4 only, IPv6 only or dual stack).

Got bored with digital ocean last year and trashed all my test instances (had four or five at one point and degraded down to two). Starting again with #snac on ionos, using #caddy instead of nginx. This was handy

crazy how fast #snac is on this old machine, when just using the api instead of the built-in webinterface.
Displaying my timeline, even with the new ssd, takes about 10 seconds, CPU usage is at 100% during that time. Really curious how the numbers will be with 2x PII 350MHz.
When using #pinafore or #tusky as client, timeline shows up kinda instant.

Really enjoying running #snac on a low end server so far. Thanks a lot @grunfink@comam.es for this great piece of software!

I would even host it at home, but it seems like huge parts of the Fediverse are IPv4-only, and #ActivityPub behind Dual-Stack Lite doesn't sound like fun.

I am enjoying this snac2 instance. It's always nice to start out with a "clean" feed where I'm only following a few accounts and not 2k.

#snac :) Super leichtgewichtig, läuft auf jeder Kartoffel (siehe diese Instanz), und ist mit einem podman-compose up schnell hochgefahren (oder docker compose wenn's denn unbedingt sein muss ;) )

https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2

Next up in a new store is merchandise! I had to grab my own set of stickers for this one, the artwork is so cool!

You've got Susie, snac's default icon embedded in a QR code. And then this ridiculously amazing artwork from @prahou that is just a must have for your sticker collection - or on a shirt - or mug. Just get it!

When #nginx max_connections queue feature is only available in the paid plus version, #haproxy needs to take place in between
Limiting the connections to the poor #snac daemon, which dies on the old hardware, when receiving too much incoming connections (as far i debugged it)

That looked like the perfect solution for my use case (replicated storage accross the internet betweend dc<->homelab) but unfortunately Garage is not a POSIX compatible storage and does not support locking and stuff.
My plan was to setup a garage cluster, use s3fuse to mount a filesystem and then throw stuff, like #snac basedir and other stuff on it.
But looks like this would not be a good idea with garage and its limitations :(

Yay, made my first pull request on #codeberg
It's about fixing the next style for #snac , which had some Symbols/Emojis in the Menu misplaced or missing. :)

Acho que terminei minhas ponderações e o ganhou, segundo lugar forte do . Acho que a única coisa que me chateia um pouco do gts é que é forçado. A solução do snac me parece bem mais elegante.

Hello from #snac , running on an old Pentium 3 900 MHz system with 512MB of RAM and 40GB 5400RPM HDD with #OpenBSD as operating system

This is very slow. And that's not caused by the old CPU. Hopefully a new ssd + ide>sata adapter will arrive soon.

Messy working table with an old 4:3 lcd display and a white / blue bordered pc case from ~2000 , medion lifetec tower with pentium iii. the screen shows jwm window manager with three terminals open, one large on the left with the daemon log showing the snac log, then two smaller ones on the right side, the top showing fastfetch with ascii fish and under that the terminal is running htop showing system stats like cpu and ram usage , running processes

Are custom emojis rendered there? :philosoraptor:

I do not know why they don't appear in any API client with my #snac instance. The strange thing is that they work fine on EmojiReact and the emoji selector, but not in the actual posts. They never have. :blobThinking:

Alright, I am now owning (when received) a brand new and sealed Micronics Spitfire EX (09-00302-XX) Dual Slot 1 Mainboard and two Pentium II 350MHz. Unfortunately the 440LX chipset only support 66MHz FSB CPU's, so my ordered CPUs will only run at ~233MHz, which will be fine for me in the first place. Maybe I can do some overclock or so.
I really hope I have enough large SD Ram lying around to pack it up with the maximum of 1GB.
Pentium II is new enough to run a modern Linux Kernel on it, but I feel like I am more interested in throwing #OpenBSD on it, because I never really hacked around with it yet and it would fit IMHO better to this hardware.
Running a #snac instance on it, would be an idea. I really wonder, how that will perform.
Stay tuned.

Nice. Got the entire libvirt+talos install all setup and running with opentofu, make file and a bash script.

Few things to clean up and then I’ll throw it all somewhere in a public git repo.

Then I need to learn about enough to deploy it.

After that I’ll have to pick some form of gitops to start fully automating building the
