The company I work for is moving places, and it's such a travel back in time. We even found things signed back to 1994.
The best find for me was #TheMajorBBS and #Galactiboard from #Galacticomm! All with test drive floppy disks, and other stuff. #RetroHardware #OldHardware
I have Arch running on an old Late 2013 MacBook Pro 15" i7 512gb ssd 16gb ram. It runs shocking well and will be my dedicated Linux distro hopping machine.#oldhardware #apple #mac #linux
I plugged it into a suitable adapter but nothing happened. There was an adapter with it, but it was 16.5v, not 12. Similar model number to what's listed on the bottom, but obviously not the right one. I don't know if it blew a fuse with that at some point in the past or what.
I really want to boot it up at some point, though.
Any pointers from #vintagecomputing folks appreciated!
That old 2008 PC whispering sweet nothings about Windows Vista? Yeah, it's time. This guide spills the bits on how to responsibly ditch your ancient hardware for free in 2025.
What's the most sentimental piece of tech you've ever had to retire?

We all know about software patches, this is hardware patching.
A friend thought I might want these -these are S-Bus adapters from a SUN SparcStation 20.
This is what a hardware patch looks like. The hardware was too expensive to replace in its entirety as you would now, so they made physical repairs. Apparently this is called a "blue wire mod".

Ah, the thrilling #saga of the #Erlang #ARM32 #JIT, where a team of #developers bravely embarks on the monumental task of... making something work on older hardware. π Meanwhile, the rest of the world holds its breath for more tales of obscure programming adventures. π€

Dell BIOS password motherboard reset jumper!
Because even if you happen to sort of speak his native language, the random Craigslist seller will not understand what you are asking for!
I remembered I may have some files on an old hard drive and was presented with these lovely connection options.
Amazingly I still have the #firewire 800-to-400 cable but the only computer I can plug it into (2009 MacBook) has a dud battery.
So now I need to buy either some kind of FW adapter or mini-USB to USB-C cable.
I never looked into the sata option, anyone know what that is?
I decided to set up @openmediavault on the 18 year old machine I pulled out of my dad's closet. Burned the ISO to a USB drive, installed it, set up RAID1 with the two other drives to test and... and that's it? Too easy.
Now I wait for the other, real drives to show up and set it up for real.
There are two other computers in the closet, guess I should see what I can do with them, too
Also, the two, 2TB drives I ordered? With shipping, $45.
Y'all I remember saving up $200 to purchase a 1.2gig drive.
More than that, I remember a cousin who has 1 megabyte of storage and we were all like, "How will you ever fill that up?"
Dad worked in AutoCAD and so, for the time, he wanted fast processors and a lot of memory. I'm guessing some of them will serve nicely for what I need.
Anyone have suggestions on a #linux distro for old hardware? I don't need a GUI.
I got the idea to take some of my dadβs old computers and do something with them. First is to turn one into a basic NAS for backups and such.
So I ordered 2 2TB drives on eBay, and pulled out a PC. Yβall this thing has 3 hot swappable drives in the front. Like, why? lol
Itβs apparently running Windows Small Business Server, for anyone who remembers that
OMG! Ubiquiti have dropped a firmware update for the ER-X! Version 3.0.0 and it looks very UniFi-ed.
I love these little things but have been worried about the support status for a while as it hasn't had a firmware release since 2023. They probably should be replaced but hats off to Ubiquiti for pushing a new major version to hardware that has to be close to (if not over) 10 years old.
Well done Ubiquiti.
I can still do almost everything just fine with my Late 2013 27" iMac, thanks to the (at the time) top-of-the-line model, and OpenCore Legacy Patcher, which allows me to use almost-current macOS versions with all security updates.
Even #Reaper with tons of plugins and DaVinci Resolve still work great.
Two points will make me upgrade in the near future, though:
* X-Plane 12 won't run, because it needs a more recent Metal version, which the hardware doesn't support, and
* #NeatVideo denoising takes ages, but it does such a marvellous job for low-light footage from my almost-as-old DSLR.
