I had to reluctantly admit that โ€œnumber go up, make fun noise when go upโ€ is actually important for game feel so I added damage numbers.

Problem is that because there are just so many enemies, spawning a chip for every enemy looks messy to me.

Video has three different options - which one looks the least wrong?

1 - Every number, every enemy, every hit
2 - Only big numbers
3 - Only 50% of numbers, randomly

Hallelujah. it's getting correctly rotated. Some internal matrix pointer juggling was messed up due to how the scene rendering to the texture works
Long story short: RLGL.state.currentMatrix not pointing to the right matrix.
Lots of fun figuring all that out.

This week for #XenithAwakening I worked out some concept ideas for the Jet Blazer battles within the game. The idea would give the illusion of moving really fast, while also ensuring the player has time to fight.

So I've been working with opengl and x11 and I complained about how opengl doesn't flip row order. Most people just tell whichever library they use to flip when they open the file.

I wrote a cute little flip loop instead. Isn't it just adorable.

A code snippet showing C code for a function named "Draw Background". A few X11 functions are called to get the window attributes first. Afterwards a loop is created to flip the row order of a bitmap. Finally all the normal opengl code is called to clear the buffer, draw the pixels and swap buffers.

Since last Monday I am trying to upload 1 short video per day about my gamedev progress. I just looked it up and it turns out that yesterday was day 214 since I began working on 8-bitBot. Let's see how far I get with these videos ๐Ÿ™‚

A mistake I did initially was to record 1080p fullscreen GIFs or screenshots and put them in the long description.

Zoom on the important stuff or reduce the window size, it's easier to see detail when the image is 700ish px wide! :)

A kind family member donated their Steam Deck to my cause. In total, it took less than two hours to get a build running on it, and maybe another two to make some optimisations to get to 50+ fps.

I am seriously impressed with Godotโ€™s export pipeline, that seemed almost too easy.

And it also forced me to finally make an in-game menu to quit the game, so thatโ€™s a bonus. ๐Ÿ˜

In this image there is an add-on for the protagonist's gun, pretty hard to describe with words, but it's futuristic and metallic.

I worked out a simple lighting system that should help me with making my cutscene work :)

Making the light settings configurable is more work than working out the light effect in the shader; but being able to change the light color like that and what a profound effect it has on the atmosphere is pretty motivating to expose all those values properly.
