The image depicts a picturesque coastal scene from St. Ives, Porthminster Beach in Cornwall, England during the late 19th or early 20th century. The panoramic view shows a sandy beach extending into the distance where it meets calm sea waters on one side and gentle hills with greenery on the other.

On the left edge of the image, there is a cliff leading down to the water's edge, which gradually slopes downward towards the central part of the picture where the beach spreads out. These structures are distributed along the top edge of the image on elevated ground, with some nestled into the hillsides suggesting that they were built for scenic views over the coastline.

A railway line is visible in the foreground running parallel to the beachfront. Alongside it, we can see freight wagons carrying various types of goods or materials, hinting at active transportation and commerce during this period.

The overall atmosphere exudes a sense of tranquility with no apparent human activity captured within these boundaries. The color palette consists mainly of muted greens from th [...]

The image displays a scenic view overlooking St Ives, Porthminster Bay in Cornwall. The viewpoint is elevated from above the village and includes prominent features such as buildings with steeply pitched roofs typical of Cornish architecture, visible through lush greenery on the hillside leading down to the coast.

In the foreground, there's an assortment of structures including what appears to be a brewery or industrial building with distinct red brick chimney stacks. Beyond this area lies Porthminster Bay itself, showing golden sands and calm waters where sailboats dot the horizon. The bay is backed by rolling dunes which fade into misty outlines on either side.

The middle ground features railway tracks curving along the coast line, indicative of a historical method for transporting goods or passengers to coastal areas before modern roads were established.

In the background are more residential buildings and an expansive view across St Ives town towards the coastline where a headland juts out into the sea with what might be remnants of old fortifications.

The overall palette is dominated by earthy tones, greens from vegetation, blues in the sky and water, contrasting against the earthen reds of brickwork. This image captures an idyllic yet historic moment likely around late 19th or early 20th century judging by its style which aligns with period postcards known for [...]

St. Ives, Gurnard's Head, Cornwall, England between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Views of the British Isles England Cornwall (County)

#StIves #Gurnard #Cornwall #England #PhotochromPrints #StIves #BritishIsles #Britain #photography #historicalPhotos #photochrom

loc.gov/pictures/item/20026966

The image depicts a rugged coastline with prominent rocky outcrops jutting into the ocean. The sea is turbulent, especially around the bases of these rock formations where white foam suggests rough waters crashing against them. The rocks themselves are covered in patches of greenery and vegetation indicative of coastal flora adapted to salt-laden environments. Inland from this scene lies a grassy expanse with some sparse trees or shrubs visible at certain distances away, indicating varied terrain within the area captured by the photograph.

The color palette is primarily composed of muted greens, grays, and blues which are typical for such natural coastal scenes in overcast light conditions. Notably absent from this image is any indication of human presence, suggesting a focus on the untamed beauty or perhaps an early 20th-century aesthetic where nature's raw elements were the main subjects.

This photograph seems to be part of a series known as "Photochrom Prints," which are created using a color lithographic process. The watermark and text at the bottom right corner suggest it may have been from St Ives, Cornwall in England during approximately 1890-1900, capturing aspects of British Isles' landscapes with an emphasis on Cornwall's coastlines.

This particular image is likely one among many documenting diverse locations within Britain, specifically aiming to depict a ti [...]

My ambition is to be fit enough to cycle from Cambridge to St Ives (no, not the one in Cornwall!) and back. My motivation is purely to be able to get to Tom's Cakes without having to drive on the A14.

I'm sure at some point I've suggested somewhere that there's some sense in treating the run of settlements along the #GreatOuse from #StIves to #Brampton (and onwards to #StNeots if you're feeling optimistic) as a single "Ouse Valley Urban Area". They're all fairly interlinked, have many similarities and would benefit from a unified voice, especially in the context of local government reorganization. #OuseValley #OuseValleyUrbanArea #Huntingdon #Godmanchester
