"In a contest between the United States and China to dominate AI, which country is likely to come out on top? Srnicek’s analysis leans toward the idea that China, despite having many weaknesses relative to the US, could well win the tech race.
The reasoning is disarmingly simple: whereas the US tech industry is focused on innovation, China’s priority is adoption, and it is likely that adoption will be decisive in the long run due to the need for a general purpose technology like AI to be diffused across the economy to reach its full potential:
(...)
Whatever the outcome of this contest, it’s unlikely that the technology will break decisively into two hemispheres, east and west, due to the complex interaction of value chains internationally. Instead, there will be a “layering of different geopolitical [tech] stacks,” with the pursuit of a balance between American and Chinese power likely to be a viable strategy for many countries, although a challenging one to pull off.
Unlike Srnicek’s 2015 book (coauthored with Alex Williams), Inventing the Future, which encouraged the Left to embrace automation as part of a postcapitalist vision, Silicon Empires steers clear of developing leftist policies for AI. Srnicek restricts himself to just two demands: no war between the United States and China, and Big Tech must not be allowed to dominate the development of AI.
Those are useful starting points for navigating the Left around AI, but ultimately a more ambitious agenda will be required. Any contemporary socialist program worthy of the name must be able to explain what role AI should play in the economy and society, how it should be governed, and what its relationship should be to the state and between states. Whatever happens in 2026 with the AI bubble, the political challenges posed by this powerful technology will only grow greater with time."

Q. What's your #superpower?
A. Ads don't affect me. Never felt the need for television or car.
#Superpower wish list: an inexhaustible portable source of toilet paper that I don't have to restock.
My useless superpower is always happening to glance at the clock when it reads 12:34.
Social learning is humans' true superpower! And that's why we need to maximize social learning at meetings.

@ApostateEnglishman It's the #USA that is dreaming if it thinks it can continue indefinitely behaving the way it has in 2025 and remain a true #superpower with influence over nearly the whole world. Not only is this not ethical behavior, it isn't even competent amoral #imperialism. It isn't #realpolitik, it's a mean drunk on a bender. It's #Nero fiddling while Rome burns. #DecadentEmpire
Saw an old #superpower post. I want quasi-autonomic proprioceptive particulate telekinesis.
Everyone knows about flat force shields, curved force bubbles, and crude force tentacles. Indeed, "crude" is the operative word in how telekinetic powers are shown in media.
I want a huge cloud of force marbles, that can change colors and shapes and sizes (even become invisible), and that can phase from ultra-hard indestructibility to ghostly insubstantiality. They should also be set-and-forget, so maintaining a protective shell around me doesn't require constant concentration, and the supersonic travel pod I'm zooming around in doesn't vanish if I get too interested in the book I'm reading. And I can use them to extend my sense of touch, or even hearing (they can be diaphragms reacting to vibration), and maybe sight. (I think that one breaks the paradigm, but sonar will work.)
The force marbles can work singly or in groups. They can be a magic carpet, can temporarily replace a lost button, can be a rain of needles or a hail of bullets. They can conform to a body and make one look like a different person. They can do any of the standard Invisible Woman or Green Lantern stuff.
Compress a marble into a dust mote and make it insubstantial, send it into someone's brain, make it pea-size and solid in a major blood vessel: instant untraceable stroke. Flatten them to a swarm of tiny buzz saws. Walk about with an invisible carrying case that floats above you to provide sword space. Send a ghost fog into a sealed room and feel what's there by a touch-based radar-like sense. Put motes in anything or anyone you want to keep track of. Pick locks from the inside.
This is a refinement of the artificial force fields idea that's mostly used in typical blunt-telekinesis form in the 3rd World Products series by Ed Howdershelt, by way of the Great and Powerful Turtle from Wild Cards. And yes, this is the sort of thing I daydream about in detail. #superhero
"Because the performance of the US this century has been so awesome in absolute terms — economically, technologically — the nation’s relative decline can be hard to visualise. But it is there, in the limited effectiveness of US sanctions over recent years, in the struggle to stay ahead on artificial intelligence, and in the strategic assets that China dares to own in the western hemisphere. The military gap over China is not what it was at the turn of the millennium. Even a garden variety Republican president would be lashing out in these circumstances, if not quite as recklessly as Trump.
Always beware the downwardly mobile. Those of us who live a better life than we were born into cannot begin to understand the trauma of going in the opposite direction. A small drop in status can unhinge people, even if their absolute position remains good. It was the Weimar middle class, inflated out of their savings during the slump, who turned to the National Socialists in elections, not necessarily the worst-off. In geopolitics, the same process plays out on the largest scale. What is Russia’s war in Ukraine if not a protest at its reduced status since the Soviet collapse?
The individual matters, no doubt. In fact, Trump has won me over to the Great Man theory of history. But some patterns seem to hold across time, person and place. If there has ever been a declining power that did not behave erratically as it settled into its new status, I don’t know it. Trump’s behaviour is an extreme version of something that might be happening anyway, has happened in the recent past and is liable to happen after him."

Be a #generalist! Having #multipleinterests is a #superpower in today’s world, contrary to societal norms that favour #specialisation.
The key to turning these interests into a lucrative career lies in #selfeducation, #selfinterest, and #selfsufficiency.
By pursuing multiple interests, individuals can develop a unique perspective and create value that cannot be easily replicated.
