In the New Normal™, the human ability to read closely and intentionally is a finite and scarce resource.

The image is a visual representation titled "Why Readers Don't Like AI Writing." It features a comparison between AI writing and human writing, using an iceberg metaphor. The iceberg is divided into two sections, with the visible parts labeled "Text" for both AI and human writing. Below the surface, the human writing iceberg has additional layers labeled "Subtext," "Author Intention," "Contextual Impact," and "Dialectical Participation," suggesting that these elements are not visible in AI writing. The background is a light blue gradient, and the text is in white and black, with arrows indicating the relationship between the visible text and the underlying elements. The overall layout is clean and organized, with a focus on the differences between AI and human writing.

I encourage colleagues who are embedding #SyntheticMachines into workflows to not abandon the #humanities

#AntiPatterns are examples of common solutions to recurring problems.

The solutions are either ineffective or counter-productive.

Since “pattern synthesis” has been rebranded as “AI”, it’s worth revisiting emerging anti-patterns of #SyntheticMachines.

Using a machine to imitate or provoke feelings is like trying to use a hammer, gun, or nuclear technology to show affection.

[T]he definition currently requires regular and substantive interaction between #students and instructors; substantive interactions with machines or other forms of technology that do not involve in [an] instructor would, therefore, not qualify.

Although the milestone release of ChatGPT as a
commercial product was just 14 months ago, that
does not mean that government regulatory efforts
are waiting until we have clarity on real use cases
or impacts. While the Al genie is out of the bottle,
there are major efforts to fence it in, often in naive
fashion (it's hard to build a fence around
something which is not understood).
